New burger joint in TF
Tried it and liked it a lot. The food was great and the service was quick. Inexpensive but not like fast food. Also they were able to accommodate my dietary needs. We'll be back.

I love it. A place that would serve a cow flop on toast would be fine cause it's local and locally owned. . Don't like what I said about a small town eatery so be it. Whine all you want I still didn't like the food. Get over it. So if I went say 6 times and still didn't like it it would then be fine to say so. Wasted money twice. Thats enough for me. I'm sure all you fine? folks slamming me have never complained about anything . You folks really got to get a life if this is so important..........

Don't like a vinegar dressing in my slaw. Prices are a tad high.. I've been spoiled by just one visit to Bubb's in Sunderland. ( Not sure, maybe Amherst).."
Here's your original post. Free speech, but pretty critical for a first visit. I don't like mayo in my slaw. A matter of personal opinion. So we support our friends, employers and community event supporters. Well, I don't really care for " newbies" trashing local bussineses on minimal impression.Since we are all so imperfect perhaps you should run for public office and fix everything. There will be mayo in ervery slaw. Helmens? Do you have a preference?

After being dragged thru the coals I went back yesterday and tried the ribs, both beef and pork. I still stand with my first review. Good but far from great. Tastes like they use a liguid smoke as well.. Been smoking meats and fish foe well over 25 years so I kinda do know a bit about smoking food. And ya gotta remember I do have a right to my opinion no matter what mj- mn and mik say. Seems the above mentioned do a fair job of speaking thier NEGATIVE opinions.. Nuff said. Have a good day.Heading to Wendell center and then down to Montague Center for the Old Home Days.

Hi All -- I don't think it's been mentioned to Newbie, but I think it's affected the responses he or she has gotten to his BBQ review. As a newbie, you may not realize that the owners of Holy Smokes live in Montague. Some of us are their friends, some of us are their neighbors. Some of us -- I am one -- appreciate the faith they showed and risk they took, in opening their restaurant in Turners. Honestly, every time I drive by and see them busy I am so happy for them. And every business that succeeds in Turners helps us all. Newbie may not be aware of the struggles Turners Falls has seen or of the support new businesses there need and deserve. I'm not saying it' wrong but I'm uncomfortable seeing them picked apart on this forum. There's yelp.com for that.

Like you, I've enjoyed both Bub's and Holy Smokes over the years, and I think you summed it up perfectly. You get what you pay for at both Bub's and Holy Smokes -- the question is what are you looking for and how much do you want to pay? For different folks, at different times, for different reasons, the answers are different, and both Bub's and Holy Smokes are great places to go if that's what you're looking for. But don't go to one expecting to find the other, because you'll be disappointed.

I have been to Bubs in Sunderland many times and to Holy Smokes a few times. While both serve barbeque, comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. The quality of the food at Holy Smokes is much better. Bubs is more like fast food. It all depends on what you are in the mood for, your budget, and your time frame. I must confess I go to Bubs more because it is a quick, inexpensive, hassle-free meal and I combine it with errands down in Hadley. As soon as you order, you can dive into the "free" hot and cold sides. Their orange sweet potaoes are my favorite thing by far on the menu. The ribs at Holy Smokes are incredible, although you pay more for top quality. They recommend you take them home and heat them in a regular oven. I wish they were served warm right there, but that isn't feasible due to limitations with their location. So I get a slab of them for special occassions. I also like to support them because I hear they are really into supporting local events and causes. But tonight I am going to Bubs and enjoying it before the students come back. After working all week, I don't always feel like dealing with cooking and clean up.

I agree, this is a small town and to review a small business based on one visit is unfair.
One reason they're prices are a lil high (which for BBQ, they're really not...) but they use fresh (never frozen) local pork. They use local ingredients, make everything from scratch (but the buns, I believe ). They even use environmentally friendly packaging and offer local drinks and products as well.
They are a local people, serving local food and in my opinion, damn fine food. Newbie, go back and buy some bacon, you'll become a fan INSTANTLY!

Last time I tried their food was when they were in Hatfield. I thought is was fine. I grew up in Sunderland and Bubbs was the only place around for that sort of cooking, by the way Bubbs has or had great barbeque alligator. It's tough owning a business these days, and any negative feedback is hurtfull to the bottom line especially for us small business guys. Maybe a simple conversation with the owner about your displeasure would have been a good start, who knows might have gave you a free meal or something else to make you happy. Anyways I'm

Newbie, as a business owner, I have to say I don't really appreciate you visiting a place once and feeling the need to trash it in a public forum to all your neighbors. If you'd been terribly mistreated, maybe. But you just didn't like the food? Fine, eat somewhere else, but I can't see a good reason to disparage them and compare them negatively to another place you've also only been to once. They're trying to make a living, I'm sure you wouldn't want them trashing what you do for work.

If you prefer Bub's, by all means go to Bub's (they are in Sunderland, and now under new ownership, though "no changes" are promised).
Personally, I like Holy Smokes -- they put out a good product, and they charge what it's worth. But hey -- de gustibus non est disputandem ....

Blue Heron
Just had an amazing flawless dinner at The Blue Heron. I am the coordinator of [Western Mass] EatUp!, a dining club that meets through meetup.com and we just had our 10th monthly dinner at the Blue Heron.
It was a bit of a pain to deal with them, they were kind of nit-picky, but I tell you, after we had our meal (they effortlessly served 30 people, several with food sensitivities) 5 courses and from soup to nuts, every bite was delicious.
Luckily, we arranged with them to offer us a prix fixe menu so all 5 courses, including tax and tip was only $41.00 per person.
The blue cheese/arugula/endive salad was amazing, a perfect blend of flavors and textures, the mediterranean appetizer plate was out of this world, like 5 different little tastes, everything from white bean hummus to marinated roasted red peppers, served with homemade crackers and their perfectly chewy french bread.
then we had a soup that was two soups, a roasted red pepper and 5 onion soup, delish, but not as great as everything else, but still really tasty.
I had the tenderloin that was cooked to perfection, no knife necessary. The vegetarians had a roasted vegetable roulade that I heard was well executed.
Dessert was chocolate pot de creme (kind of like mousse) with homemade cinnamon mini-donuts.
I would definitely go there again!

Ate at Burrito Rojo for the first time this week. Friendly service, reasonable prices and excellent food. Highly recommended!
It's great that we have all these local, quality food service establishments in town now. Next time you're thinking of stopping at the national fast food chain, try eating local instead!
