Turners Falls-Gill Bridge renovation

Yes, people are criticizing. I've heard things like, "why in Germany it would have been done in a week".
They have no idea what a big project it is. The G/T bridge as well as the one on rt 2. Maybe they think it's just about resurfacing.
I simply say they are rebuilding a the bridges while still allowing them to be used. I think that's pretty fantastic.

On Rt 91 they are building a new bridge to use while they rebuild the old ones.

Turners Falls-Gill Bridge renovation

mickjen My frustration isn't with the inconvenience, although I must admit I go to the Wagon Wheel much less.

The project has been noisy. More than one night, I've had to call the police to inquire about the overwhelming ammonia sprays, that flooded over the whole downtown area. The contractors haven't been respectful or clean about their vicinity to the bike path.

And oh yeah, most of the contractors and employees? Hired locally? Nope, from out of state. Some as far as the Southwest.

But the absolutely most frustrating part can be blamed on the locals. Despite the lane being very narrow and having blind spots, you all drive through it like it's freaking Mario Kart. Even with a crowded construction zone, the majority of users SPEED excessively. SLOW DOWN IN DOWNTOWN!!!!! We have kids, cats and drunks everywhere. Please slow down.

Turners Falls-Gill Bridge renovation

patrick People are criticizing the work? I think most people realize that bridge needed a lot of work and that it would take years to complete. At the same time, it's natural that people are frustrated that access to Gill and Rt. 2 is so difficult for so long. Businesses in particular are greatly affected by ease of access, and one business in particular cited the bridge as a main reason they were forced to close recently.

Turners Falls-Gill Bridge renovation

JTHK Ichnojoe,

Thanks a million for the update. For several years, I taught technology/engineering in Springfield so I know a bit about what it takes to accomplish a project like this. It is pretty tricky and safety must be a priority, unlike at that factor in Texas.

Thanks again,
Jonathan

Turners Falls-Gill Bridge renovation

Jonathan,

The Turners Falls-Gill Bridge (the proper name) renovation project is about one-year ahead of schedule. Two way travel should be available by November of this year.

The underbridge restruction will continue into early 2014. Numerous bolster plates have been added to the original iron structure along with new stretcher beams and iron support elements that will make for a much stronger bridge than ever before.

Most people who criticize the work are ignorant as to what it takes to complete a massive project such as this. They must be happy folks, as you may know . . . ignorance is bliss!

Ichnojoe

Latest news

JTHK Hello from Galway, Ireland ...

I've not been state-side since June 2012 and am wondering -- purely out of curiosity -- what is the current status of the Gill-Montague bridge?

Thank you,
Jonathan

I'm looking for a map/directions showing how to leave Turners Falls -- the site where I've gotten them from before -- www.montaguebridges.info -- seems to be offline.

Montague Bridge Update

mik Specifically what they did was drill out the original bolts which were rated for lighter traffic and insert new thicker bolts for the extra traffic the bridge is experiencing due to increased traffic from the Gill bridge being only one way.

They needed to be able to get to the underside of the bridge to do the work, so the only time they could do it was when the canal was drawn down, which happens annually on Sept 10th. Sucked for the derby, but what are you gonna do? Safety is more important.

Well whatever they did sure didn't improve going over it. Wonder what they actually did to it.

Montague Bridge Update

mik Mass DOT has announced that the 4th Street bridge going over the canal from Turners Falls to Greenfield will undergo repairs during the annual canal draw-down this September.

Yes, the bridge to Greenfield over the canal will be shut down for about a week. Ugh!

They estimate the work will take nine days to complete, starting Friday, September 9th, and ending on Monday, September 19th, but hope to have it done sooner.

They will be working on it 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete, and the work itself will be quite noisy with jack hammers and power drivers operating throughout.

There is a website set up to indicate the current status of the bridges and showing routes to use, here:

The Bright side

hopefully there are some local folks(wmass) hired for this work also.....

The Bright side

mickjen The only people I have met from the Bridge construction were at the Voo. It was two
men from Ohio, that have moved to Turners.

But it's nice to see a town that takes pride in itself. Fire hydrants. Doing tree work BEFORE a storm hits. Greenfield has left me leery of politics....

Now, if we could just get everyone recycling.......

The Bright side

Millers Falls. I've been pondering organizing a pub crawl of sorts over thar. Perhaps tour Element Brewing, Millers Pub, over to Roadhouse for horseshoes and music? Some Fri or Sun afternoon?

The Bright side

junkman With all the construction going on in the county it shows people are working. Making money and keeping businesses afloat. Its also a good excuse to stay home and get things done around the house.

More traffic has been flowing through Millers Falls which may be a blessing as my business is doing just fine. I'm sure a few others in town are experiencing the same.... Of course there are a few knit whits who do not take heed to the posted speed limit but then again there are always a few.

Its a long shot but maybe Millers Falls will come back to life....

Cheapside Bridge

originally the plan was to COMPLETE the General Pierce work BEFORE shutting down the Gill-Montague bridge.... GRRR...they really want to keep folks from getting to Montague/TF eh?

JTHK Mik,

Nice website by the way; simple, to-the-point, clear. Sucks about the bridges.

Cheapside Bridge

mickjen I wrote a facebook message to Bill Martin back in May, stating the road needed repaving at the Stop n Shop intersection and that the Cheapside bridge needed major resurfacing.... I wonder why he never responded to it, or my friend request...... XD

There are potholes at the flex points big enough to keep all the local repair shops happy....
