Apples and Pears to Cider
This was a bad apple year, but, we have some pears and some apples to grind and press this Sunday at 11 am at 181 Meadow Road in Montague Center. Meadow Road is very close to the Book Mill. 181 Meadow is directly across from Red Fire Farm down a long driveway. You will know you are in the right place if you see two solar panels in a farm field and an antique tractor adjacent to the driveway.
Bring your apples or just come to watch, to meet new people and to taste. Everyone gets a taste! I will be picking my small supply of apples off my trees (Just a couple of dozen).
This will be a mini potluck; so bring a few snacks to keep you going. We will have a wood barbecue going and the last of my tomatoes from the garden.
It is beautiful here now. If you like farms, fields and good people, please stop by.

Affordable Farms - Montague Project
We are always seeking volunteers to this and other projects in town. This project had 5 volunteers and we had a beautiful night at the Strawberry Soiree.

Affordable Farms - Montague Project
Dear Friends:
Please give this a careful read.
You may not be aware that the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust was responsible for enabling Red Fire Farm to move back to Montague thus ensuring that 122 acres would remain as farmland for the future.
Now Mount Grace is launching a project to make farms and farming affordable for future farmers. A series of activities centered at Red Fire Farm are planned to highlight Mount Grace's work beginning with the Strawberry Soiree dinner on June 16 which will be served right in the strawberry patch on Meadow Road. We hope you will be able to attend as all proceeds will benefit the affordable farms project.
More importantly we need some light volunteer work to make these Montague activities happen; you will not have to spend a lot of time. If you have a few hours to spend and would like to help with future Red Fire events to benefit Mount Grace, please plan to attend an initial meeting of volunteers on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:00 pm. We will meet at 181 Meadow Road in Montague Center, which is directly across from Red Fire farm. Signs on Meadow Road will be posted to let you know where the meeting will take place.
This will be a simple easy way to give back to our town. I hope you will be able to attend.

Plant and Garden Book Sale
The Leverett Historical Society is having its annual fundraiser
Plant and Garden Book Sale
on Sat. May 26 9-Noon
BUT we still NEED plants and garden books to be donated!
Labelled Plants can be dropped off behind the Lev. Town Hall anytime this week.
Garden books can be dropped off at the Lev. Libary entryway anytime also. (there is a box labelled "Book Sale").
Then put the date on your calendar and come by to support the Historic Society and this year the Leverett Elementary School greenhouse project!

It is an idea, a movement, and a gardening strategy that focuses on creating gardens with whole systems thinking in mind. Learn about what we see when we come to your house and how we apply the designers process to your land.
This event is hosted by Llani Davidson resident of Montague and founder of Gardens for Change, a consultation service focused on permalculture design, edible landscaping and backyard food production now in its 4th year of operation.
She has over 10 years of gardening experience working first with organic CSA farms and then veering off into smaller scale permaculture models. She teaches classes and workshops
and works one on one with clients teaching them about best permaculture practices in their back yard.

Red Fire Farm Tour
Hi Conor, My name is Michelle. I just moved to Montague a few weeks ago. I see that this event was a while ago but I just thought I would see if there's any other community events going on that you know of. I have been work trading on different organic farms for the past couple years and decided I'd like to settle down for a little bit. I was able to get some beautiful veggies from the Old Depot farm stand before they closed up. I'm hoping to meet like minded folks and get involved with fun things.

Jerusalem Artichokes
If anyone would like some free Jerusalem Artichokes for seed or eating, please let me know by November 8. They are easy to grow, are bug free, and require no care. They tend to spread but are easily controlled.

Red Fire Farm Tour
Hi Everyone:
As you may know, Red Fire Farm, an organic CSA, has moved to Montague and now has 105 acres in Farmland. Come with us to celebrate this event as the farm is a great addition to our town.
If you are around Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and would like a tour of Red Fire Farm on the tractor wagon, stop by our house at 181 Meadow Road in Montague. I will have healthy refreshments and drinks for you. You will really enjoy the beautiful fields and plants.
Of course you will have to listen to a short presentation by the Mount Grace Land Trust which made possible the farm purchase by Sara and Ryan Voiland. Then we can party!!

Garden Helper
Hey all
I just moved to Montague on October 1st and recently found this site! I wanted to offer my services to anyone who is interested. I run my own backyard garden business called gardens for change. I have a permacuture focus. What I mostly do is help new growers get set up who want to go from lawn to food but aren't sure where to begin. I usually do a free consultation and then a lot of grunt work including delivering loads of manure setting up beds. making planting charts, talking of companion planting etc. . If you know anyone who is excited about backyard gardens but needs a little help/encouragement getting started send them my way. Check out my web site at localgardensforchange,com.

Jerusalem Arthichokes Free
Hi Everyone:
I have some very nice Jerusalem Artichokes that I harvested today (3 bushels out of a 3' x 8' bed). They would be excellent for starting your own bed or for just eating.
Call me by Thursday evening if you want some. Otherwise, they are off to the Food Bank.

Mulching new plant beds
I love this idea, reading the article it looks very easy.
I have a small area to do, maybe 4ft by 6 ft, and think this is a wonderful way to get started.
My ground is very sandy, (no surprise for most of us from Turners at least), so this would make a nice thick cover on top.
Great Idea.

Mulching new plant beds

Forget the tiller - make a lasagna garden! We have been doing it for a while now and it works great.
It's very little work and you get great soil out of it.

Mulching new plant beds
Hi
New member to the Garden Chat here and was looking for some guidance
I have just started to prepare some new, rather large for me, beds for spring planting.
I wonder if anyone out there has a roto tiller that they would lend or rent to me to turn over the soil for winter. Also looking for ideas of what to mulch into the soil this fall so that I have great and fertile beds for flowers and veggies in the spring.
