Historical Society Meeting

mik Tonight, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

MONTAGUE HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS

The Montague Historical Society, incorporated in 1969, has been collecting, preserving and displaying items showing the pattern of life throughout the history of the five villages of Montague. The collection was housed in personal homes until the Masonic Society donated the first floor for our use. Due to the hard work of Mr. Allan Fiske (who single handedly renovated) the space offered storage, a small lecture space and an office.

Recently the building was sold and converted to condos. All the items were moved to the schoolhouse on RT. 63 where they remain. Many efforts have been made to secure a new site for the Society, but to no avail. The Town has shown no interest in helping to preserving our heritage.

After finding Grange articles while working at the schoolhouse and showing them to Mik Muller, a Grange member, we discussed the possibility of having the Grange be the site for our artifacts. Much work and discussion needs to be done to make sure the upstairs is a place which can preserve all types of articles, as well as be accessible. The use of the Grange would be a great way to have meetings, displays and be more available to the public.

On June 21 at 7:00 the Historical Society board as well as the Grange will be looking into all the pros and cons of this idea. Input from archivists who are concerned with preservation, Historical Society members, Grangers and the general public are welcome to attend.
