Letters about alleged violation of Open Meeting Law by GM School Commmitee

In the new August 19th issue of the Montague Reporter, we printed letters submitted by Sandy Brown and Jeff Singleton, both related to the Northwest District Attorney's Office recent findings regarding an alleged violation of Open Meeting Law by members of the Gill-Montague School Committee.

The findings were delivered earlier this month in a letter from Assistant DA Cynthia Pepyne to GMRSD's attorney. We've posted a transcript of that letter here: http://montaguerepor...hool-committees.html

Montague Town Meeting Finds No Compromise on G-M Budget

By David Detmold - A divided Montague town meeting on Thursday, August 5th voted down a compromise motion to meet the Gill-Montague School District halfway to plug a roughly $380,000 gap between what the town considers an affordable school assessment, and the $16.4 million budget the school committee believes is needed to operate the district schools.

Precinct 1's Jeff Singleton, a school committee member, cautioned town meeting members to wait until the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) meets with town and school officials in the coming months to work out a long term plan for fiscal stability for the G-M schools before approving a compromise budget. "Wait until November so we can get a true compromise, with a plan," Singleton said.

In the end, by a vote of 40 to 37, the majority of town meeting members sided with him, voting down the compromise and leaving the Gill-Montague schools without an approved budget. For the third year in a row, the question of what level of school funding is affordable to the member towns and necessary for the district's operation will go to a district-wide meeting open to all town voters in Gill and Montague in the fall.

For the last two years, the special Gill-Montague district meetings have failed to approve a budget number the schools could live with. That impasse has led to two years of fiscal oversight of the district by the DESE.

This year, all sides seem inclined to compromise, but the timing of that compromise may depend on further meetings, and appears to hinge on developing a blueprint for a five-year plan for fiscal stability agreed to by all parties, including the state.

In It To End It (Breast Cancer)

Both my husband and I were born in the town of Montague and graduated from Turners Falls High School 35 years ago. Unfortunately, during the past 2 years both he and I were stricken with breast cancer, exactly a year apart. Luckily we live near enough to Boston to receive excellent medical treatment and both our outlooks remain positive. Having recently finished treatments, we are both walking in the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer in Boston on May 15 and 16. We have committed to raise $1,800 each for this worthwhile event. This money will be distributed in the Boston area. Funds raised support 5 key areas:
Medical research - access to treatment - screening and diagnosis - support services - education and awareness.
Won't you please consider making a small donation towards this cause? Perhaps you know someone touched by the disease. You can make the donation in their honor (or memory). Please visit my Avon website: http://www.avonwalk.org/goto/MAstell
Thank you for your support!

Warming and Subscriptions

mik Dear Friends of the Montague Reporter:

As you may be aware, the Montague Reporter currently has an effort to gain 100 new subscribers for the by the end of winter - March 19th - and to bring in needed funds for the homelessness prevention program and new warming shelter of the Interfaith Council of Franklin County at the same time.

Certainly a worthy cause.

Many people have helped in various ways, by reaching out to their circles and inviting friends to subscribe to the paper. Most notably, Patrick Pezzati has generously offered to match dollar for dollar all funds they raise during this drive for the Interfaith Council's homelessness prevention programs from Turn It Up! CDs and Movies at the Montague Book Mill.

Also of note is Jonathan Ransom, a founding member of the Montague Reporter's board of directors, who went above and beyond by suggesting to 50 of his friends try to find two new community members to subscribe during the Warm Up Franklin County sub drive. He found three! (effectively increasing the subscription list in his home town of Wendell by 5% in the process).

It is very hard for a small paper like the Montague Reporter to weather the recession in our part of Western Massachusetts, particularly in the dreary end of winter, especially when advertising dollars are few and far between. The influx of new subscribers you can help them drum up will not only provide them with a much needed boost in revenue in March, but will stand them in very good stead as they approach new advertisers (with an expanded subscriber list) in April.

So, thanks for helping out how you can, in whatever way you can, to make their subscription drive a success!

We are so lucky to have a local paper like this in town. Let's support them however we can.

Montague Reporter, 12/23/09: Read All About It!

Coming to you a day early this week: Turners Falls Airport Commission gets ready to hire a new manager, two Greenfield men and an Ervingside woman are the three finalists; White Paper or Whitewash? -- opponents claim state study on sustainability and carbon impacts of biomass burning is "biased from the start," as some consultants hired by the Department of Energy Resources are already on record in support of biomass electricity; Rep. Chris Donelan suggests that Wendell get out of the Mahar district and regionalize with Amherst so other towns can pursue their plans for K-12 regionalization with Mahar; Singleton accepts the Hanold challenge on budget alternatives in the wake of town planner debate; Wailin' Dave at the Deja Brew; the Warblers Rock; Talking Pictures: Me and Orson Welles (coming to the Amherst Cinema); the story behind the lighting extravaganza on Griswold St, and more! Read it slow -- no paper next week!

Idea

Have you seen the two houses battling for the best Holiday lights here
on Griswold Street in TF?
Take the kiddies or yourself to see them.
There must be a story behind it!
Photos would be good with night film too.

Reporter needs laptop computer

Do you have a working, internet-ready laptop computer that you aren't planning to use this winter? Would you be willing to give, loan, or sell it to Montague's non-profit community newspaper for a very modest price? We'd be ever so grateful. Here's the backstory:

With the help of many of you, at our November fundraiser the Montague Reporter raised enough money to replace its most egregiously overtaxed office computer, to install new memory in several others, and to make several other small but important technology upgrades. Thank you, and special thanks to Mik Muller and Veronica Phaneuf, who are contributing a great deal of time and expertise to this project.

However, with winter coming on now, we've realized that if we also had a very basic laptop, we could set the editor up to work in his living room and keep the heat turned down in the office several days a week. We think we could save hundreds of dollars this way! Can you help? Let me know through this site, by clicking the "Contact Montague Reporter" link in the Reporter area on www.montaguema.net, or by calling the Reporter office at 863-8666.

Thanks in advance! Jen

Read All About It! (Montague Reporter, 10/9/09)

This week in the Montague Reporter: Montague City polling station may move... to Precinct 3! Erving says "No Way" to gas stations in the aquifer recharge zone; Millers Falls may have the most beautiful planters in town, catch them before the frost; Chamber pots, turnips and sleighs provide interesting reading for Montague Center residents... in days of yore; MOVE member Ramona Africa coming to Brick House for documentary on Philadelphia police bombing; Leverett sees no gain in regionalization push; Wendell picks up speed on internet connections in the town center; and MontagueMa.net looks forward to a party in the 3rd St. parking lot. And much more: falling arches, bridge work, flu shots (are they really good for you?) and Thoreau revisited. All in this week's issue. Look for it wherever fine newspapers are sold!
