Highland Park (Millers Falls) Pet Waste Notice

Patrons of Highland Park in Millers; please help us keep the park healthy by cleaning up after your pet. We are starting to experience considerable pet waste left behind, and this is a substantial health concern for others who use the park.....including kids who enjoy the facility on a daily basis.

Exposure to animal feces is not healthy for humans or other pets. Animals are infected with hookworms and other parasites may pass eggs in their feces.

The Town of Montague Health Department has a Pooper scooper/dog and cat fouling regulation where, if a person who violates this regulation shall be fined $25.00 for the first violation, $50.00 for the second, and $100 for the third and each subsequent viloation (with a potential fine of up to $1,000).

Thank you for helping to keep our parks healthy and clean.

roundup

Several towns on Cape Cod have negotiated with the utilites to stop using round up under powerlines for the rest of this year and possibly into 2012 because of concerns about health risks.

roundup on plains

JTHK Roundup is a product manufactured by Monsanto, a company that has produced many useful products over the years but I have issues with several of these products. A quick, cursory search of the web has yielded lots of results of the benefits and cons of using Roundup. I personally would never use it on my property because we have well water and the last thing I want is for a product like Roundup to be seeping into the aquifer. I don't have any professional, scientific studies at-hand to support my decision however.

Here's an interesting article: http://motherjones.c...erbicide-soil-damage

And another: http://www.huffingto...efects_n_883578.html

Yet another: http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2909

Jonathan

roundup on plains

I was walking my dogs along the powerlines at the plains today and discovered that the utility company is spraying roundup ( I think this is similar to agent orange ) under the powerlines. I am not sure if it is legal for them to do so.

SAWMILL RIVER 10K RUN

patrick There were 108 finishers, I think. Last year, it was about 10 degrees and windy, while this year was probably 35 with no wind at all.

For the record, I saw no one make use of the porta-potties.

Softball practice Has started in Montague Center

We have started a Coed over 30 Softball league in Montague Center. We are looking for more people interested in having a good time. You don't have to be an ace, just want to play. Until further notice practice and games will be at 6.30 in Montague Center ball field next to the elementary school. I have managed an over forty league before and we all had a good time, so come on down, 6.30 on Wednesday night. Bring your glove and if you have a bat bring that along also.
It will be a good fun time by all who choose to perticipate. You can email me at Warrenwelch@verizon.net if you have any questions.

SOFTBALL FOR ADULTS

I am interested in starting a local softball team in Montague Center. I have managed an over 40 league before. It would be for all adults and we would start with pratice and hopefully create two teams. Play on a regular basis, say every thursday night.
If you are interested please contact WarrenWelch@verizon.net. I will take care of the details to get started, permission, softballs and some bats. Any equiptment you have would be appreciated.
This would be fun soft ball, everyone gets to play, know umpire, no called strike outs. Honesty is the best way. Great fun, show them you can still play ball.
We can expand later if it seems appropriate.
Warren Welch
413-367-0005, lets get started.
I am sorry about that space in my email address, corrected now. This will be a fun time for everyone. I have the plan, All of us can take it from their.

The Plains

Mass Wildlife website has a listing and maps of the state reservations. The one for the plains is a topo and shows the roads.. Hope this gives you a starting point. Not sure where locally you can get topo maps.

The Plains

llanstarkweather I don't have a copy in my archives, but I believe the 1936 survey of the US Geodetic maps did have all those roads in the largest pitch pine forest and blueberry haven, not to mention the turtles..., many of which I travelled on maybe 50 years ago. You can go on line and download those and other maps.
