Maya Seed Ark Project, August 10th

Please consider joining us on August 10 at 7:30 in the meeting room at the the Wendell Free Library for an evening with Camila Martinez, of the Maya Seed Ark Project (www.themayaseedarkproject.com).

The evening, a Benefit to raise funds and resources for Camila Martinez's Maya Seed Ark Project includes Camila's special reading of THE MAYA PROPHECIES, also storytelling and a compelling media presentation of the very present crisis of GMO infiltration of heritage seed corn stock that is profoundly effecting the Maya people in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. For the Maya this is not only an environmental crisis--- it is a spiritual and cultural crisis. The Maya know themselves as the 'People of the Corn'. Corn is central to their spiritual heritage, ceremony, and food security, as well as their daily nurture.

Camila Martinez has been a tireless advocate for native seed banks amongst the Maya populations in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. Her Maya Seed Ark Project has been instrumental in educating about the effects of GMO and establishing functioning heirloom seed banks amongst native populations. Bioneers has recently requested that Camila Martinez and the Maya Seed Ark Project will be the Guest of Honor at their 2010 Food and Farming Banquet. Camila has spent many decades studying, living, and working amongst indigenous peoples in Central and North America. She is passionate about her cause and we think you will be too after hearing her story and the stories of the Maya people.

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Wendell Library and the Wendell Agricultural Committee. It is free, although donations to help Camila with this work will be gratefully accepted.

MUSICIANS, SINGERS, AND WANNABEE SINGERS NEEDED (TONIGHT!)

Indeed!

So, where in the song is anything to love? It's all negative?

Perhaps this song is best left to personal amusement, rather than a public showing.

Also, we should all try to be as positive as possible about the bridge repairs. These planners, laborers and politicians will be in our town for the next 4 (or more!) years. I think it best that townspeople and business owners try to work with these changes and not against them.

MUSICIANS, SINGERS, AND WANNABEE SINGERS NEEDED (TONIGHT!)

I'm sorry to see that this is the song that will be rehearsed for the TF Block Party Parade. The TF Block party is trying to promote the great things that TF has to offer. This does not seem like the type of song that should be used to celebrate a town that has come a long way in the past ten years. Just my personal opinion.

WesternMA Connect, Inc. July 2010 Broadband Update

mik MBI Application Successful!

On July 2, 2010, Governor Deval Patrick and members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation announced that the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) had been awarded $45.4 million of federal ARRA funds. These funds will be used to construct over 1,100 miles of fiber-optic middle-mile infrastructure in western and north central Massachusetts. The award was formally announced at a ceremony held on July 8 at Greenfield Community College. Event attendees included U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, U.S. Senator John Kerry, Governor Patrick, and Congressmen Richard Neal and John Olver. Both Senator Kerry and Congressman Olver recognized Connect for its decade-long support for the creation of an advanced telecommunications landscape throughout the region. All speakers made reference to the many letters received in support of the application. Your compelling stories definitely impacted the application outcome. Thank you to everyone who submitted letters and congratulations to the MBI!

What Does This Mean For You?

In 2008, Governor Patrick and the Massachusetts Legislature established the MBI with the mission to extend affordable high-speed Internet access to ALL residential, commercial and public places across the Commonwealth. This new federal award will be combined with the $26 million of state funding already in place to make this a reality. Internet service providers have stated that once the MBI's network is complete, it will become more cost effective for them to bring high-speed Internet access to those who currently have none.

What's Next?

In the coming months, the MBI will continue to be very busy designing and engineering the network, negotiating access to state-owned assets, forming partnerships to support network deployment, and encouraging the telecommunications industry to be prepared to provide services and invest in the region. Meanwhile, the MBI has contracted with Connect to work collaboratively with regional planning agencies, local municipalities, and other organizations to ensure that this network is constructed as quickly, cost-effectively and efficiently as possible. Under the terms of the federal grant, two-thirds of the project must be built by 2012 and the network completed in 2013. This is a huge undertaking. Although you may not visually see progress right away, be assured that the MBI and many others are working diligently to meet the federal timeline and requirements set.

How Can You Help?

If you have not already done so, please visit http://www.massbroadband.org/mapping/survey.html and complete the online survey. Encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. This information will assist the MBI in its effort to more accurately map where broadband does and does not exist. If you are an elected official or local department head, please respond to outreach conducted by the MBI and Connect. This network cannot succeed without your participation!

Silent Auction

Everyone please come join our 1st Annual Silent Auction to benefit the Friends of the Montague Grange and Old Home Days. The Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with Old Home Days Saturday August 21st from 9:00am – 4:00pm at the Grange. Proceeds will go to the revitalization of the Montague Grange building and a percentage will also be donated to the organizers of Old Home Days.

The Grange building was originally the Unitarian meeting house and in 1935 was purchased by the Grange. The Grange is one of the oldest national agricultural organizations in America but in Montague it has also become a hub for our community by hosting concerts, dances, art class, garden clubs, yoga and much more.

The Friends of the Grange has been formed to help preserve and renovate this town treasure. We have already made enough money to help restore the roof but so much more needs to be done.

We are very excited about his event; some of the donations we have received so far are quilts, glass, paintings and gift certificates from local business. If you are interested in donating please visit http://www.montagueg...on%20Form%202010.pdf. Or call Jill Bromberg 413-367-9959 or Sally Prasch 413-250-3405 Thank you for your support.

Almost had a bear

mark2 This morning about 7:45 I had a big black bear just 20 feet from my sliding glass window. He showed no fear of my dogs barking, I almost have to give him a lead pill. Lucky for him he came to his senses and slowly walked away. He looked a little confused, not saying he was sick but he did not seem right.

I saw in the paper that the guy was treated and released - amazing that his injuries weren't more severe.

He was lucky - that spot is extremely dangerous due to the limited sight and the fact that drivers generally go too fast over that overpass - in both directions (I live three houses down from it). I would urge people who shop at the farmstand to be extremely careful. There have been other accidents there. It's just not a good spot for parking and getting in and out of the car.

GGarrison Likely the life flight was due to playing it safe. Any accident like that comes with the possibility of internal injuries or head trauma. Both can be hard to determine from visual inspection and the patient can be unaware of them.

Yes, everyone = I didn't see the accident happen, but was there for everything afterward, as it was close to my house.

A man walking along the road, who was actually about to get back into a friend's car that was parked alongside the road, was hit by another car, momentarily "crunched" between the hitting car and his friend's parked car, and then bounced onto the grass by the impact.

This sounds horrible = and it was = BUT I think he's going to be fine. In fact, I was puzzled the EMTs called a Life Flight.

Where this young man was struck, and crunched, was at the tops of his calves. I saw bruises, but no bleeding, no compound fracture = a good thing! Now, he MAY have hidden back or neck or hip issues from being thrown. But he WAS conscious = hysterical, but conscious = the whole time....and was able to answer questions from the EMTs and police.

Even though it is so sad he was hit, I'll say his silver lining was the size of his body. He is VERY big = both in girth and height. The same impact at my height would have crushed my thighs or hips.

The Recorder was on the scene. There'll likely be a story tomorrow.

Turners GIrls Softball Takes Western Mass Trophy

“We Are Not a Team That Quits.”
Turners Tops Ware, 5-3 in the 10th
By David Detmold
Amherst – After a one hour rain delay on Saturday turned into a two day wait for the ump to say, “Play Ball!” the game resumed at the top of the fourth inning Monday afternoon between the Turners Falls and Ware girls softball teams, battling for the right to call themselves the Western Massachusetts Division III champions.

What started as a sleeper, 0 – 0 going into the fifth inning, turned into a nailbiter as Turners went ahead by one run when Hannah Bellows’ single scored Katelyn Dodge, running for Emily Mailloux, who doubled to left center field with two away to get things going for Turners.

But the home team quickly watched their lead evaporate in the sixth, when Ware scored four runs to put the game almost, but not quite, out of reach.

Kaylie Robidoux led off for Ware with a single to shallow center field. After a sacrifice bunt and two more singles loaded the bases, Crystal Best scored the lead runner with a shallow fly ball that just cleared second basewoman Kelsey Waldron’s glove. Coach Gary Mullins had been signaling Waldron to play deeper when the inning started.

Some Turners fans were heard to say, “That’s the ballgame,” when Ware catcher Amanda Pierce smacked a triple with the bases loaded into deep right field, scoring three. But pitcher Emily Mailloux got Turners out of that miserable inning with a strike out and a pop up to left, and Turners came back fighting in the bottom of the inning.

Ware was giddy with elation. Turners grim with determination. Dakota Smith-Porter popped out to the shortstop. Then first basewoman Katie Rinaldi stepped to the plate and socked a triple to deep right field. Turners fans began to breathe again.

Stacey French popped out to third, and hope began to fade, until Brittany York, a pinch hitter who knows how to get a solid hit in a pinch strode to the plate and doubled to left field, bringing in the runner. Stephanie French followed in her twin sister’s footsteps, and popped out to retire the side, with Ware leading 4-2 going into the seventh and perhaps final inning of the season for Turners.

Mailloux mowed down the lead batter, swinging. A ground out to second was followed directly by a line drive over third, and Smith-Porter made a sweet catch, running full tilt to haul in the third crucial out.

Turners at bat in the bottom of the seventh. Down by two. Prayers were rising to the heavens from the Turners stands. Coach Mullins stared at the ground.

A pitcher’s duel between Meaghan Swarts, on the mound for Ware, and Mailloux, at the plate for Turners. Swarts lost that battle, giving up four balls in a row to let Mailloux take her base.

Emma Butynski chipped a single over second. Hannah Bellows went down swinging, one, two, three. Two on, one out, the title on the line, and catcher Elysia Ollari strolled to the plate.

Ollari fouled three away, then failed to connect on her next swing. One out away from misery and defeat.

Dakota Smith-Porter admitted later, “I haven’t been hitting very well lately.” But everyone promptly forgave her when she powered the ball deep into left center to score the runners and tie the ball game.

Mark Sullivan, who is not known for excessive caution coaching third, made the right call waving Butynski around to home. She barely slid in beneath the throw, and Smith-Porter took third to deafening cheers. Rinaldi followed up with a drive to shallow left, snatched from mid-air by Ware’s hard charging shortstop Molly Pulchtopek, to save the day for the opposing team.

The two teams battled back and forth through the eighth and ninth innings, with neither able to gain the upper hand.

Ware got a runner on, Kelsey Hobson, in the top of the eighth, after Waldron bobbled a sharp grounder and threw to first too late. She took second on a sacrifice, but Ollari made a great play, pegging a perfect throw on a 2 and 0 pitch to Butynski to catch the runner trying to steal third.

Turners, then Ware, then Turners again went down in order in the bottom of the eighth, and then the ninth, as the pressure gauge was rising in the bleachers and the dugouts.
Saturday’s rain delay and scoreless innings were long since forgotten as Ware led off the seventh full inning of play on Monday, with the Ware fans screaming for victory.

Swarts popped up to her rival, Mailloux, on the mound. One away.

Robidoux was aiming for right field with a sharp grounder, but Rinaldi dashed to the left to deny her, making the play at first unassisted.

Toni Stewart found a hole in Waldron’s glove, taking first on an error, and then (barely) stealing second. And suddenly, with two down, Ware had a base runner in scoring position.

But Mailloux bore down, forcing the next batter into a feeble grounder back to the mound on an 0-2 pitch to retire the side. The worm had turned.

In the bottom of the tenth, Ollari went down swinging. But Swarts did not find Smith-Porter so easy to dispatch.

She singled to center, and followed that up by stealing second. Rinaldi hit a long fly ball to left, and the heart of every Turners fan leaped. So did Ware left fielder Sydney Simons. Two away.

Stacey French made it look easy, in the end, with a shallow pop fly to center field. Ware had been playing her deep. The second basewoman, Callie Horgan, ran back. The center fielder, Jessica Daley, ran forward. But French dropped the ball smack in between them, scoring Smith-Porter, and the Turners team claimed the Western Mass trophy to resounding whoops of joy.

“I was so nervous,” said Mailloux after it was all over. "That was the longest game I’ve ever played in my life. Those are the games I love to play. There’s so much pressure! I was so nervous. But I knew our girls would come back, and they did. We are not a team that quits.”

Now, on to Worcester for tomorrow’s Division III semi-finals, at 3 p.m. against Murdock High, from Winchendon, who won the Central Mass title in a 3-2 victory over Blackstone Valley Tech on Saturday.

JTHK Isn't intelligent discourse a wonderful part of our democracy? Whether people agree or not with each other, I think it's important that they engage in meaningful discourse about possible paths to take after all, we are all in this together.

I do believe that health care is a right; after about 200,000 years of evolution, I firmly believe that a society needs to provide this right to its population. You may disagree with me, and that's fine. However, in my readings and understanding of socialism, a public option is far from socialism and certainly nothing that a democratic country should fear. (Obama ramming it down our throats? If that's the worst thing he did, then fair play to him -- Bush rammed an illegal and ridiculous war down the world's throats which I think is a far worse crime than trying to revise health care.)

Obama is a man and I doubt he's going to save the world; I don't know why you would think he would. No man can do that.

The government tells you to pay your taxes and not to speed, murder, steal. Gov't tells you to do a lot already.

I disagree with our gov't more often than I agree with it. But since our exchanges are so brief and we've not had many, you wouldn't know that about me, so no worries.

Listening to Obama may cause you illness, but at least he can pronounce words correctly and actually complete sentences while still sounding reasonably intelligent.

Jonathan

Whatever faults are present with Obama's administration and with the Democratic party, Obama isn't a dictator and cannot directly rule the country like one consequently there must be consensus and teamwork. Blaming the "liberals" for problems is not only false and completely incorrect but it's also just as incorrect as a blanket-blame of the GOP. That said, the GOP has done spectacularly in demonstrating that they are not willing to work with Obama at all. I completely respect the Republican party's ability to unite with a common front. The Democrats would do well to learn from that!

JTHK Junkman, Mark:

As we all know, there are extreme groups on both sides of every issue. They sometimes have their purpose and often bring a balance to sometimes difficult issues. If we're going to lay blame with PETA, "anti-gunners", then what about NRA and all of the "other" groups on the other side?

Blaming people for banning leghold beaver traps isn't going to solve any issues. I'm too busy to create an idea of my own but I'm sure there are plenty of creative people out there who could provide a creative, humane, and balanced approach to dealing with an overcrowding beaver population -- if they are indeed overcrowding (I haven't received any direct official data).

junkman M2 You mention the banning of traps back in the nineties. Another issue which was banned is hunting bear and bobcat with dogs. I remember the trapping commercials on television of the 1 in a million shot of a domestic dog being held in a leg hold trap. Yes, 1 in a 1,000,000 shot. Some people made their living on trapping and hunting. Not anymore.

Going in even further lets not forget the gun ban of 1998. And oh look at the sign the idiot Menino put up in Boston at the start of the Mass Pike. As a licensed dealer I still haven't figured out what a gun show loop hole is. Must be some liberal pipe dream... What has the gun ban done? Not a thing but attract more criminals to the state. Look at Chicago. There is a ban there. The people live like friggin animals.

Just remember November is coming. There seems to be too many negatives clogging the democratic way of thinking. Hopefully B.O will have the oil mess straightened out by then.

Oh and get yet another group involved at an x amount of money. Eventually the talk about beavers will die. Too many hands in the cookie jar. And you guessed it...A bill the tax payers will pick up... Mark1 My understanding is that the power restoration work goes to the areas with the highest number of customers out of power first and then on down the list.

Right now, Greenfield has a lower percentage of out of power customers than Montague (18 vs. 75%) but the number of customers out of power is double ours (9237 vs 4428).

So until those people are powered up, expect little in the way of work.

And if you live on a low density rural road...fuggedaboudit ;)

We lived in the NW corner of Greenfield during the 96 ice store...5 solid days without power. At least this time we don't have to worry about frozen pipes...just frozen meat.

Actually, the number is 76.56% of people without power. (ugh) I'm keenly interested in how power restoration happens -- I'm sure the large trees and limbs must first me removed and the wires re-attached but I'm interested in the more complex side: how does WMECO monitor losses, how do they decide where to go when, etc.

Anyway, I hope that everything is restored ASAP as I'm now officially annoyed at not having water -- but I suppose a few days w/o electricity is a small price to pay for all of our modern conveniences. Definitely makes me cherish indoor plumbing!

State of emergency?

Thanks, J-Man.

As for Judd Wire, once we get the generators running, we should be all set until we get the 3-phase power back for the plant -- that is, unless there's a problem with our redundant T1s, which connect us to our place in California (but we won't know till we get some power to do some tests).

The estimate we've heard from the electric company is Saturday night or Sunday, which seems to be what they're telling everyone. Our guess (hope) is that means the electric company is pretty sure almost all power will be restored by then, which means a lot of people will probably get it before then. But we'll see what happens ....

I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth ("Montague wins!"), but 99% sounds like a high number. That would mean there are only 84 people with power in town? Does anybody know if there are people in Millers Falls who do NOT have power? My whole street does, which is about twelve people, and I see lights on West Main Street. What about your section, junkman? And have you heard anything about downtown?

As of 6pm, Millers Falls Road was closed between Hillside Road and Industrial Drive -- I think it's been that way all day. Judd Wire has no power, but we have a couple of smaller generators, and a bigger one is on its way. We expect to have some power from them by morning, but most of the machines won't be back on until the regular power is restored.

junkman I've heard Millers Falls Road is a mess towards the Tech School. I also heard TF is difficult to enter. I also heard Judd wire is shut down for a few days. Could all be rumor but this is what info I have been hearing.

It also seems to be affecting cell service. I have been having sporadic net service and slow phone service.

State of emergency?

Hi Junkman - yes, we've had power all day (we lost it for about a minute last night, but that was it). I haven't tried to go anywhere yet -- they told me not to bother coming to work, since there's no power there, but I'll probably head out in a little while to relieve the guys who've been waiting around for the power to come back on.

I've heard things are a mess out there -- anybody know anything specific about Millers Falls Road and Turnpike Road?

State of emergency?

Just a word to any other commuters...Greenfield Road had many trees down this morning with wires downed and across the road. I started driving down that way as the yellow barrier tape had been taken down but turned back when I saw that some wires were laying on the road. Took TF road through Turners and across into Greenfield.

There are many streets closed off here, but main roads are accessible. I realize it's a state of emergency (or was, not sure) but my office was still open...

JTHK Also, many trees down in the Taylor Hill area. The Moore's Corner area in Leverett (next to the Co-op) had both N. Leverett Road and Dudleyville Road closed as of 7ish this morning.

Transition Montague Presents: Valley Time Bank Introduction

Transition Montague Presents: Valley Time Bank Introduction
June 7 from 7-8:30 PM at the Montague Center Congregational Church

Hey there Montague neighbors!
Need help with odd jobs around the house, but can’t afford it right now? Would you LOVE a massage every once and a while, but don’t have the extra cash? As the economy wobbles and money is harder to come by, it makes sense to explore alternate ways to meet our needs.

A TIME BANK is a solution that supports our community by providing a complimentary system of exchange that builds relationships and connections in the process.

It's an hour for hour exchange system that works like this:

Alison spends 1 hour helping Susan create a family budget spreadsheet and earns 1 TimeDollar hour (TD$) as a result. She then spends her 1 TD$ getting acupuncture from Kathy. Kathy earned 1 TD$ doing acupuncture and then spends it on an hour fiddle lesson from David. And so on. No US dollars have been exchanged and yet many needs were met and relationships were fostered.

The Valley Time Bank system is already in place and running, so it's really easy to get started. All you need to do is come to an introductory talk and sign up.

June 7 from 7-8:30 PM at the Montague Center Congregational Church

Come for the introduction and sign up if you're interested. This system has been running successfully in Orange for 3 years and it’s time to bring it to Montague!

Thanks for helping to spread the word-
Becca Martenson

I don't care about my cover----
I am not making any comment about Stash's comment about Deb what-so-ever !!!

You are right Mike, I was not born or bred in Montague. My wife and I moved there eight months after our oldest daughter's birth and we lived in Montague for over 33 years.
My Dad led by example and told his two son's-I being the youngest-- that "when you move and get established in a community, you should participate in that community"!
That is all I tried to do--to do my best to make my community better.

I do believe that as a new comer, one needs to go slow and try to respect the more 'senior' residents and gain respect from them.
I must say that many times during my various elected terms to office ,the nicest compliments I received was when 'long time' local residents would call or stop and talk to me and offer their support to put up signs or support to their extended families.

Montague is a great town to bring up a family. I just dislike to see the animosity develop between new comers and long time residents. There has always been a lot of pride in town on the part of long time residents----Lets not disrespect it and squelch it !! Clark Edwards

If so, who is he to talk, and if not, why not?

I will also say, not to blow your own cover, that I believe you were not born in town, but I think your elected service has been matched by few, if any, others, whether they were born in town or not. Just sayin ....

I certainly think it would be better today if various interests communicated more effectively today. Stash, how does this sort of comment help?

In my opinion, it doesn't do much to make things more positive. We've all lived SOMEwhere, and just because it may not have been right here our entire lives does not mean people can't bring valuable experience with them.

I think all residents want a good future for the town. It doesn't have to be like it's always been, does it, for the town to have a good future?

For example, my family is from Western Pennsylvania. coal mining town. steel towns. now defunct and people are trying various ideas to bring the town back to life. It was a BOOM town when I was a kid, vibrant main street shopping areas.

My dad had to go elsewhere to find work, and I grew up in a different environment. Doesn't life experience or education mean anything if it's somewhere other than Montague or Turners? Because if people can't get past that notion as you very clearly stated "I love it when short timers think they have all the ansewrs" then there won't be any long term solutions to how people can work together for the betterment of everybody.

In this case being a short timer is a good thing if it makes me less biased. If you think your argument on this subject is of any value you are mistaken. Well JL when you have lived in town over 65 years and KNOW the town for what it is you can speak with a bit of knowledge.. I was an elected DEMOCRAT for a total combined 38 years so I think I understand the politics in town a tad better than you. And you have the yikees to call me biased because I don't agree with you. I love it when short timers think they have all the answers to the towns problems. I at least gave 38 yrs back to my town.

Stash,
It seems to me your opinion is way off base. Being new to the town and know nothing about Deb's politics or connections I support her because the job she does. She has been very efficient at her job at a minimum. I had a somewhat complex issue and she was knowledgeable about where the information could be found. And she was very happy to help. So, get in line with reality and try to hide your bias.

patrick "Was it a waste of time? That's up to you I suppose."

I should rephrase that. I guess I think there are other areas that I think are a better use of time. I ran for School Committee last year (and lost) because I thought it was an important thing to do. Given the fact that the most insidious official in town just succeeded in installing another supporter, overriding the wishes of the voters she will represent in the process, I was probably right.

As for voter turnout, there are people like me and you who vote every single time, but the majority is only compelled to the polls when something is directly important to them. In other countries, people show up at the polls because they are mandated to by law. I am thankful that no such law exists here, even though I wish more people would take their civic duty seriously.

mik Don't knock yourself, Mike. If you look at the numbers, she did about as well as any of the other people that didn't have anyone running against them. AND you picked up 60 votes, which isn't bad. @Patrick, I agree. I talked with Deb about this, too. Its not that she was doing a bad job at all, its just that I wanted to be Town Clerk. Was it a waste of time? That's up to you I suppose. Would she have bothered putting out the number of signs she did had she not been challenged? Again, I'm sure you have an opinion on that, too.

Running against an incumbent takes a lot of work. If you go by the voter turn outs, running for anything in Montague seems like a waste of time. I put more effort into trying to get first time voters out. Obviously, it didn't pan out.

Deb won because she's GOOD at her job and has been there for a long time so she's efficient and knows where everything is. Mike didn't win because he's an unknown, has little experience in the field, and the vast majority of people seem to agree that Deb does a good job, so why vote her out?

As for your experience on the phone, well, I can't say. Perhaps you should have called up Jay DiPuccio, the Dem caucus chair, since he's the one who would know and he doesn't report to the Town Clerk.

Exactly, Patrick. And instead of fixing (gasp! regulating!) our food supply, we're going to fight each other to the death over the health care costs associated with treating the conditions it induces. Take high-fructose corn syrup. It was developed by Japanese scientists, yet never introduced into its food supply because of the public health implications. This whole food-transportation conundrum is the heart of so many of our problems.

Btw I learned all this in a great PBS documentary called "King Corn." I know this is common knowledge to many in our area but I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more.

JTHK Laura,

Fantastic point about how much immigrant labor contributes to the American economy.

patrick "how can we continue to spend the lowest percentage of our household incomes on food in the *history of human existence* without low-paid immigrants doing the planting and harvesting?"

Most Europeans, even the poorest, wouldn't feed the average American diet to their dogs. Americans in general don't care about the quality of the food they eat, which is pretty scary if you think about it, given that it's what you are actually putting in your body. Fast and cheap trumps good in this country.

junkman Stash,

Maybe its time to change your handle to T-REX and get a avitar of a T-REX. LOL!!!! I understand what you are saying. If you read the posts on this subject you may also agree on a conservative area.

I like the aggresive approach vs. the long drawn out approach. This is what makes us Right Wing Extremists vs The left.

Mik,

Interestingly as we have siblings in similar states of expatriatism ... I interpret this differently. Fact is, we have a pretty vast ESL infrastructure in this country ... starting with the public schools, all the way to volunteer-run programs out of churches and the one in the basement of the Greenfield library. All "free," even if they take a bit of legwork to locate. On the other hand, I know that my brother had to pay for his pricey Swiss language lessons out of pocket, and there is hardly a welcome mat of any kind there. There is a much, much heavier burden on immigrants in northern/western Europe to assimilate and/or gain citizenship, from what I have heard.

The bigger issue that we have to face up to as a country is: how can we continue to spend the lowest percentage of our household incomes on food in the *history of human existence* without low-paid immigrants doing the planting and harvesting? We cannot do it when we continue to spend a disproportionate amount of that income on transporation, and simulantaneously dismantle what little public transportation infrastructure we have. Hate to point out the obvious, but our "wealth" in this country is ultimately traceable to slave agricultural labor and that economic model continues, essentially. Put it another way: someone said recently to me: "Americans spend their $$ on cars, French spend their $$ on food and wine, Italians spend their $$ on clothes, and Koreans spend their $$ on electronics." Everything falls in line from there.

JTHK Stash,

Your point is understood; we cannot control other countries' immigration policies but we can control ours. Furthermore, I'm not suggesting we dish out free anything -- I didn't suggest that at all -- but simply suggested that our immigration policies need to be improved.

Secondly, we are a nation built of immigrants (and Native folks) and while other nations may have had a much more homogeneous population for a much longer time.

Respectfully,
Jonathan

mik There's a tiny town in upstate New York that made English the official language of the Town and all Town business is now required by law to be transacted in English.

The entire town is about the size and zone as Montague Center, but without the gas station or library or ... well, almost anything. Yet they felt it was necessary to guard themselves against the threat of multi-culturalism and someone trying to transact Town business in a language other than English.

I find that impressively small minded, and a potential lawsuit waiting to happen. Does this new law decree that Town notices cannot be printed in Spanish for the local farm worker population? Doesn't that disenfranchise that community? What if a health crisis occurs, shouldn't they be informed too?

Sure, you can make the argument that they should learn English, but there's no law that says they have to... no programs designed to help that along.

By way of example: My brother moved to Sweden (my mom's homeland) last year and he took a required six-month Swedish immersion "boot camp" class. At the end of the six months you are very nearly fluent in Swedish, and passage determines whether you are granted citizenship.

If U.S. citizens are so adamant about people learning our language, I think we all have to agree that these people need help in doing so. While I don't believe in hand-outs, I do believe in fostering understanding and investing in our citizens. Think of it as public education. It's in our interest that they are fluent, don't you think?

Once we make that investment then you can pass a law on language requirements. Otherwise you're just creating problems and unrest.

I support your thoughts only in a more aggresive way. Therefore by supporting the issue in Arizona. Its a start by setting the stage. Lets get the bugs out of what is happening there. This is too new to judge. I have not yet seen people hearded up there. Only complaint after complaint. Makes me wonder.

I do not agree with cities/towns/etc boycotting Arizona because of this.

JTHK I agree that American immigration policies need to be examined and may require adjustment in the direction of increased fairness, effectiveness, and efficiency. I think it's also fair to say that we must all (!) keep in mind that -- unless we're Native -- all of our families came here from other places, consequently I encourage perspective on the immigration issue.

Jonathan

Cinco de Mayo

junkman Hi Jonathan

I agree with you. True our neighbors appreciate this. There is a legal process to become a citizen. Use it.

Some of the issues I have heard in the past is some people come to this country illegally, get a job, get caught for being in the country and then get a free ride home at the taxpayers expense only to do it all over again. It seems to be a vicious cycle which may never go away.

JTHK Junkman,

I like to think the world is what we make of it and that freedom, justice, and equality are values that all people desire and certainly our neighbors would appreciate.

True it goes both ways. In my dictionary reverse prejudice is what I call it. Maybe a beer summit would help resolve the issue.

The Arizona law does not legalize racial profiling. The media has it hyped up to be though.

True there are many things that are unconstitutional. Doesn't the constitution only pertain to American citizens?
