My father-in-law helps out sugaring with Quinn's Sugar House up in Northfield. They supply the maple syrup for the annual NFD pancake breakfast, its good stuff. They're open to the public from the last week of February to the first week of April.

Don't know about who would have honey but, there is a sign almost across from the waste plant in Erving for syrup and there was a place on 63 tjat built a new sugar shack (Telega's?) and the one across from the candy shop in Deerfield.

rail road tracks
My neighbors uncle lives in Millers with both the Amtrac and old B&M tracks within a couple hundred feet of his house and he says he doesn't even hear them any more. Kinda like living in the city and not hearing the street noises.I was down there a week or so ago and noticed the noise of the trucks on 63 trying to slow down with thier engines at the Roadhouse curve. My advice would be to get a topo map and see where the tracks are in relation to the location of the new place..

Freight trains go by along the tracks right now along my property boundary - Montague Center area. Sometimes they bang, sometimes just chug along. This rail line is on the map of Montague from the 1850's ( or 1860) . Probably brought a few local boys back and forth (or not) to/from the civil war.

My property borders the tracks about 400 ft from the house. We hear the trains about 5 times a day, at all hours of the day and night, even on weekends and holidays. It can be quite loud, especially in the summer with the windows open. It was pretty distressing when we moved here, but we have gotten used to it and it's really not too bad. Occasionally they will leave the engines to idle for hours, which is very annoying, but luckily that doesn't happen here as much as it does in Millers Falls. Rarely do they use the horn, like they would if there were a level crossing (tracks cross the road).

If your friend is interested in Montague Center and has concerns about night time sounds, you may also want to mention that the bells of the congregational church ring throughout the night every hour on the hour and at the half hour.

I've got a friend who is thinking of moving to Montague and needs information on the rail road tracks, i.e., the schedule, how loud is it, ect. I was hoping to get some information together for her, thanks.
