Hi. Not my Dad, an old friend. He also has nomorobo on his phone. That is also a joke. His home phone announces the caller so that helps. His cell is only on when they are out and about. Only gets them on that once or twice a month. Ed

Wow
Newbie, I agree with you on the spam calls. I still can't believe the carriers allow the calls through, since (a) it takes up their valuable resources, and (b) we don't want the calls!

The federal Do Not Call is a voluntary list, and some spammers actually grab the list and use it to make calls! So, it's not a resource anyone really uses anymore. It was built for legit businesses to purge their own call lists.

I have Verizon for my cell phone (not sure if your dad is on a cell or not), and they've introduced a new system where you get the name of the people calling, if they're legit or the number is real and actually registered with them, and "POTENTIAL SPAM" if not.

There are also apps you can install, like Mr. Number and RoboKiller, which I use. When a call comes in from a known spammer number, it blocks the call and you never hear it ring.

They'll get it right one of these days... either the carriers (Verizon, AT&T, etc), or the phone makers / software vendors.

Hello Stash - yup, that's the person. I guess swiping is a possibility -- maybe I'll have to look into setting up a camera or something. Other than that, we're doing okay -- hope you are, too.

Problems With Greenfield Recorder Delivery
Has anyone else in the Millers Falls area been having problems with their Greenfield Recorder delivery? We've had the same carrier for years, and they've been very reliable, but lately I've missed at least one paper a week. I've got a name and address for the carrier, but no phone number. If it happens during the week, I can get the paper delivered the next day, which is okay but not great, but today the office is closed.

Does any one know what the folks that deliver the Reporter get per issue delivered? The young lad that delivered mine has never let me down and I would like to make sure he still gets paid for my delivery at the least during the digital delivery. Thanks and STAY WELL......

Face Masks For Hospitals
Hi Chris,

Thanks for contributing to the mask-making effort to help keep more folx safe!

This info about where to drop off face masks was posted this morning on the Montague Central Mutual Aid listserve (montague-central-mutual-aid@googlegroups.com):

"The Western MA Nurses Association/Baystate Franklin Medical Nurses has established a safe collection spot for donations of PPEs (including homemade masks) on the porch of 74 Crescent St, in Greenfield. See attached image for more info. This is Rudy Renaud's house (former Greenfield City Councillor, works for MA Nurses Assoc), and I got the information from her via Facebook. Re homemade masks, she said: "People in the community can use the homemade masks while we are looking for n95s for HCPs. We will sort through them so it’s good to make them if you can."

Face Masks For Hospitals
I had heard that local hospitals were looking for people to sew face masks until the shortage of PPE can be addressed. I've been working on some, but I don't know where to bring them. The hospitals probably don't want people walking in off the street. Does anyone know of a drop off location for either Baystate Franklin or Cooley Dick?

Covid-19 Issues
Hello,
As this virus spreads, if there are elders or compromised folks in the community who have no one who can help out, please contact LifePath 413 773 5555, or your local church or helping org. such as Montague Catholic Social Ministries. 413-863-4804

Needs can also be posted here for folks to help out if /when they can, but this shouldn't be the only place to ask for help.

We can flatten the curve of COVID-19 by due diligence of hand washing, no hand-shaking or close contact, (social distancing) and by self-quarantining if you develop flu or flu-like symptoms.

Be safe everyone.

Hello, I’ve been thinking I’d like to find some people to practice my Polish with, even if they are beginning speakers, I’d like the opportunity to learn by teaching. Please feel free to let me know if you would like to participate or if you have any ideas about finding participants or a venue. I live in Montague Center and there’s always the Grange but I figured it’s probably not the most convenient to most people.

Might not hurt to try putting up another one and seeing what happens. Sometimes people will do something like remove a sign like that and then regret it later. If they see it again, they might decide to change their behavior. Not a guarantee, but I've seen it happen. I think most people are not evil, but they tend to be clueless, and sometimes it takes more than nudge to wake them up.

Doesn't always work, but that's probably what I would try. If that doesn't work, then it's the motion-sensitve camera and involving the cops. . . .

Stash, I applaud your effort. Do you know what happened? Perhaps the wind took it away? If someone DID take it, it's because there are dinks everywhere -- as you know. In my own neighbourhood, there are some folks who drive too fast for the locals' taste and someone put up a sign, "Drive like your kids live here" which I thought was very appropriate. Sure enough, someone stole it but it didn't stop the home-owner from putting up another -- which has remained to this day.

Good luck, and I hope dog-owners pick up after their dogs in your 'hood.

Happy belated Christmas.

Mike, that sounds like the way I would do it, too. Most people do want to be neighbourly and sometimes folks simply make a mistake. Perhaps if Stash sees this as a repeated behaviour, he could do similarly and, by posting a sign, remind the person in question that responsible dog owners dispose of the animal's feces responsibly.

I had a problem some years ago with a person (or persons) throwing plastic bags full of vegetable fiber onto my property (at a wooded section along the road that looks like it might be no-mans-land). They looked like what you might have left after you'd run them through a juicer. I put a couple of hand-lettered signs on trees that said, "Please - No Dumping", and it stopped.

Discretion is an important quality of being a functioning adult and you, being 77, should know this. Yes, within certain parameters (don't forget that the first amendment IS regulated and you can't always say what you want when you want to) you can write what you want but being a community forum, I'd hope you'd think about what you're writing first.

Your logic is flawed: "Don't like it, don't read it." How do I not know until I read it? As I said earlier, if this was your personal space then I wouldn't be calling you out but as it is a community forum, I am. With that, I close my end of the back-and-forth.

Or you could stop being a complete dick and use your words instead of typing symbols to conceal your nasty attitude. I don't care how old you are, you shouldn't insult people in an on-line forum in this manner.

And why would you yell at someone? Perhaps a polite, "Could you please pick that up?" would suffice. And since you indicated that you can get out there time, you could ask someone who is able to write a note on a piece of a paper and tape or tack it to a surface nearby so this dog owner would see it. Often, people simply need to be reminded of basic neighbourly courtesies but people universally hate being yelled at which is why you're "yelling" probably would accomplish as much as that dog put out of its anus.

And at 77 you should know better.

Being handicapped and have only seen her leaving the area I just can't run out and yell at her when she is over 100 feet away. I can see the intersection of Highland and Quarry out my kitchen window. Even if I see her coming I still wouldn't have the time to get to her. At 77 years old I shouldn't have to pick up after some lazy $^%#^&&. Maybe I'll find out who she is and send her your way. And YOU can take care of the stuff.

Others Having More Verizon Dsl And Phone Problems
Yes! It's always been a bit of a problem, but we just kind of ignored it except when it got particularly bad. That was true this weekend. We ended up having a tech come out.
(FYI - re: internet alone - Their solution -- which might work for others - was to 'turn down' the speed of the DSL line. Apparently we are at quite a distance from the Verizon station and so a high speed won't work well at that distance -- although the billing office is quite willing to encourage you to increase that speed and charge accordingly...
It's working so far, but then again, if often does, except when it doesn't!)

Yes, we also noticed static-y landlines. I think we mostly just live with it and I hadn't thought about a more collective solution. If you're on that 'next door' site, perhaps we could also put a similar note/request there to see if folks are having troubles.

Nicole

Are you/others having more-than-the-usual Verizon DSL and phone problems, like me in recent 2-3 months? Examples: almost daily temporary loss of DSL service, static-filled land lines, no dial tone. Repeated technician visits, billing office not offering enough credit to compensate for loss of service or hours on the phone with support?

I'm NOT starting a general gripe thread, only determining if this is a general problem around our town. If so, might be interested in organizing some collective action to get better service/attention to the issue. Maybe file collective complaint with MA attorney general?

Stash, that was a temporary glitch. Dean was trying to fix the schedule feed and must have put the new password in the wrong place. I don't think the mistake lasted even a few minutes.

My suggestion is to call the station at 413-863-9200 with issues like this, rather than post a complaint here. This is not their support board, and they don't check it.

Thank you for watching MCTV.
