Selectboard Meeting Tonight
A vote on supporting the Battlefield Grant is on the Montague Selectboard agenda for this Monday, Jan 6, at 7:40 p.m. at the Montague Town Hall, 1 Ave. A, in Turners Falls.

David Brule, Montague coordinator of the grant application process and Board member of the Nolumbeka Project, will present a brief overview of the grant proposal and field questions. He will be requesting that the Selectboard agree (as was requested last year) to apply for an NPS American Battlefield grant to focus on identifying the likely locations of the battle and massacre at Peskeompskut ( now known as Turners Falls), as well as collecting Yankee and Native American oral histories about the battle at the falls.

Following the discussion there will be a vote by the Montague Selectboard on whether or not to support it. It is hoped that Montague residents will attend to give support to this proposal. If the proposal gets a positive vote from the Selectboard, the grant application goes forward. If a negative vote, it will be a dead issue.

Partners include:

Historical Commissions of Montague, Gill, Deerfield, Greenfield
Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head/Aquinnah
Nipmuck Tribe of Massachusetts
Narragansett Indian Tribe

Also, as advisors:

Historic Deerfield, Inc
Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association
The Nolumbeka Project
The Wampanoag Tribe of Mashpee
The Stockbridge -Munsee Tribe of Mahican Indians
The Mohegan Tribe of Uncasville, CT
FRCOG

This should not be construed as solely a Native American/ Tribal project. This is regional history both European and Indian. One of the main points is to include ALL oral histories, including Yankee and Native American.

One of the innovative products will be, however, a tribal history and perspective written by each individual tribe, preserving their own viewpoints, without filtering it through a project editor, etc. The hope is to create a balanced presentation, pointing out the multiple perspectives on this event will carry the vote. Please attend the meeting and support this project.
