Experimental writing group
Tired of other people telling you how to write? This group is for people who want to express themselves without being criticized or forced to explain everything they have to say. The experimental writing group is an informal, interactive, confidential and 100% judgment-free space to let words fly. We begin each meeting with some light stretching, refreshments and a free writing exercise. From there, we explore and discuss various writing prompts, word games and reading selections. We believe that everyone has something to say, and that there is no such thing as a "bad" writer. The group commits to keeping all feedback positive and everything said confidential. For those who want to participate, but do not feel comfortable sharing their work, reading aloud is always optional. Come make new friends, get a snack, and explore new avenues of self expression! All genres and skill levels welcome.

Meets every Wednesday from 6-7:30pm.
No commitment necessary.

Save Stonyfield Farm special labels to save the Montague Skate Park!
Save Stonyfield Farm special labels to save the Montague Skate Park!

Stonyfield Farm yogurt is offering a $50,000 grant to the community group that collects the most specially-marked yogurt labels, and the Montague Skate Park Committee wants that money to build a concrete skate park! The yogurt company teamed up with KaBOOM! (a nonprofit dedicated to bringing play back into the lives of children) to create two new volunteer-built playspaces. All we need to do is collect yogurt labels and send them into Stonyfield Farm by December 31.

The skate park in Turners Falls is facing a fiscal crisis that could easily be solved by this grant. The current property owner will charge $300 of monthly rent if we sign a new lease agreement November first. With all of the current deficits the Town cannot commit to paying $3600 a year. A group of concerned community members, parents, and skaters/BMX bikers has been meeting since September to find either rent money or another piece of Town land to move the ramps to. The group is dedicated to working with the Town and community members so we can continue to have a skate park for our youth.

Skate parks are accepted as positive places for youth to develop social skills, participate in physical activity and take responsibility for a piece of their community. The Montague Skate Park Committee, however, understands that skaters will treat the skate park poorly if they find it in poor condition. The current crisis has engaged our group to dream up a more inviting skate park made of concrete that would not deteriorate as fast as the wooden ramps we currently use. If we won $50,000 we could build a concrete skate plaza that would be accessible and welcoming to everyone in the community.

Please help us by collecting specially marked Stonyfield Farm yogurt labels at your business place, in your home, in your office! Please contact Ruth Nervig at The Brick House (413-863-9559, rnervig@thebrickhouseinc.org) to let her know you want to help. Or just drop off your labels to The Brick House, 24 Third St., Turners Falls. Thank-you!

Free film: Movements for Self-Determination
October 21st, 7pm

Undergrowth Farm presents, “Argentina: Hope in Hard Times" a documentary
film. At The Brick House, 24 3rd st. Turners Falls. Free. Refreshments
provided by the Greenfields Market. Donations to the Hot Spot teen center
gratefully accepted.

-------------
About the movie:

What would you do if you lost your job, they closed the banks so you
couldn’t get at your savings, and the government seemed unable to help? In
Argentina they stormed supermarkets for food, the police gunned down 30
people in just on day. But what happened next was truly extrordinary.

With times so difficult, people could have turned on each other in fear
and desperation, instead they turned to each other in mutual support.
These are their inspiring stories- of a failed economy and distrusted
politicians, of heartache and hard times, of a resurgence of grass roots
democracy and an irrepressible spirit of community- told in resonant
detail.

-----------
Look out for more films in this series, "Movements for
Self-Determination", the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Feel free to email us
with any suggestions!

Skate Park Work Day!
On Saturday, the 23rd, a small but devoted group of youth as well as supervising staff from The Brick House spent a few hours in the afternoon rain working on the Montague Skate Park. Though some tasks such as sweeping and painting were impossible due to the weather, vines and weeds that had overrun the park were cut and bagged, made ready for disposal.
Though progress on the skate park has been slow, it has been steady. With hopes of the skate park reopening prior to the onset of winter, the work crew on Saturday accomplished all that was possible for the day. With a few more hours of solid work—and 100 feet of fencing—the skate park could be ready for a grand reopening soon. Another work day has been scheduled for Oct. 27th from 2-5, to be followed later in the evening by a teen open mic at The Brick House.
The work that still needs to be completed at the park is painting and minor ramp repair work, removal of broken ramps, and the addition of fence to close off the fourth side of the park. With an entirely volunteer force of workers, organizing labor can be difficult. Fortunately, there are a number of local residents who see the value of the park’s reopening and step up to provide assistance with tasks as well as donations of money and materials.
