Interested Thursday Gentle Yoga Class?
Hello neighbors,

I teach Vinyasa Flow Yoga at the Montague Common Hall on Tuesday evenings, and I am looking into offering two 5-week Gentle Yoga sessions this summer called "Yoga Essentials for a Strong Practice." This is a great opportunity to kick-start or refine your practice, right here in your neighborhood. Don't miss it!

Please help me assess the level of your interest by clicking a couple of buttons in this 20-second survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QTR65RS

CLASS DETAILS:
Thursdays: 5:30 - 6:45PM
Session 1: June 9 - July 7
Session 2: July 14 - August 11

THE GOAL of this series is to provide an opportunity for a gentler, slower paced yoga class, which will spotlight several fundamental postures to help establish safe and optimal alignment for your advancing practice. Gentle Yoga postures will help reduce stress, unwind the body and calm the mind, while low-impact core strengthening exercises will help increase stability and mobility and help with postural injury prevention and balance. In addition, each class will feature a new breathing and relaxation technique helpful in maintaining a calm focus and in improving emotional well-being. The series will provide a safe a nurturing environment for beginners and advancing Yogis, while seasoned practitioners will benefit as well by bringing an open mind and curiosity, and refining their practice.

OTHER DETAILS:
Cost: $10-$13 per class, depending on when you register and for how many sessions.
Pre-registration required. (sign up for one or the other, or both and save!)
You can miss one class per session and comp by attending a Tuesday class at any time.

Please let know soon if you might be interested! Again, here is the 20-second survey to help me assess the level of interest in the community: 20-second survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QTR65RS

If you know someone else who might benefit from this class, please forward this info to them.

Thank you so much!
Warmly,
Nadya

Me too. I play fiddle and am always interested in getting together to jam. I know lots of tunes, but have difficulty coming up with them without prompting. I'm probably about intermediate.

Hello SusanKay,

Thanks for responding about the old time jam. You are the first person to respond to the note. I don't have a time, place or frequency to do this thing. I thought once enough of us showed interest we could decide amongst ourselves. I was thinking it would be great to be able to use the Montague Grange. I don't know if it would be free or not at this point but I plan on checking into that part. That's great that you can round up a fiddle or two. I'll stay in touch after giving more people time to respond and check on Grange availability.

Looking to start an old time music (not bluegrasss) jam. Hopefully there will be intermediate players like me that are interested along with skilled players. I was thinking of a regular get together if possible at the Montague Grange. I am working on my clawhammer skills any other banjos, fiddles, guitars, bases, etc. out there in need of jam time?

Cindy Green, family dance caller
Dear Family Dance Communities:

Cindy Green is seriously ill. As of Friday she was moved from the Cooley Dickinson ICU to Kindred Hospital Parkview, 1400 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. She is in Room 512.

This is a long-term acute care and rehabilitation hospital. She is too weak to talk on the phone, but cards are welcome.

An outpouring of cards could help as well as boosting both Cindy's and Grace's morale. Also if anyone has anything that is funny and could help Grace distract herself periodically that would be helpful.

Thank you for holding these two dear women in your prayers.

Anne Flaherty (mother of Miette and Ivy)

Montague Grange meeting tonight
We'll be meeting tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm in the hall. It seems like there is a lot of good stuff happening, and, as always, there are problems to be thought through and solved. Agenda as far as I can tell so far, in no particular order:

--Summer camps at the Grange!
--Building renovation/capital campaign update
--Recent donations
--Yoga classes at the Grange
--Ferd's Amazing Card party this Friday
--Basement dehumidification update
--Lawn: we desperately need mowing and we have ants

Please let me know if there are other things we should discuss. See you at 7!

Acoustic Concert next weekend
What an incredibly good turnout and fund raising event we had with the Mystery Theater event on April 2nd. If you combine that night with the concert the following week when we sold the remaining desserts, we raised $1,722 !! Yes, we did. That paid for 1/2 the roof, and then some.

The Friends of the Montague Grange have another event coming up next Sunday, on May 2nd -- the evening of the May Day celebration.

This should be a fun night of live acoustic Goddess and Soul music with two locals, Kellianna of Wendell, and Mother Turtle's Marsia Shuron Harris. You can learn more about it here:

http://montaguegrange.org/index.cfm?p=n.16

Hope to see you there. Should be a wonderful evening.

Mystery Theater tonight @ Grange Hall
I think it was $25 in advance (if you called ahead, 367-2184). if it's a deal-breaker I'm sure you can give them what for at the door and they'll relent. Also, Grange members and Friends of the Grange members will get in for $25 with no hassles.

This *is* a fund-raising benefit after all. We are in the midst of a roof replacement. You'll notice the ladder and pallet of shingles by the front.

Fundraiser Show at the Montague Grange
Paul,

Yes, the Mystery Theater event at the Grange next Friday (April 2nd) is indeed kid-friendly.

Off hand I don't know of anyone who might need the tickets. Maybe we can auction them off? Or we'll just hold them at the door for anyone who shows up and can't afford tickets for their brood.

Fundraiser Show at the Montague Grange
Hi, Mik... I see the Friends of the Montague Grange are putting on a Mystery Theater show on April 2nd as a fundraiser for maintenance and upgrades to the Grange building. I'd like to support the effort by purchasing 2 advance tickets, but at the same time, we're not going to be able to actually attend the show. I'm wondering if you or any readers of this board know anyone who would be interested in seeing the show who can't afford the tickets (or maybe a family of 4 who can only really afford to buy 2 tickets or a couple of neighborhood kids who'd like to go). Is it kid-friendly, by the way? I'm assuming it must be, but maybe that should be spelled out.

Anyhoo, put me down for 2 tix and let me know if you know anyone who can use them.

Thanks
pk

Mystery Theater & Dessert Night
Reminder: "Popped Star" at the Montague Grange
a fundraiser event by the Friends of the Montague Grange
Friday, April 2nd, 7:00pm
Grange hall, 34 Main Street, Montague
Call for reservations: 367-2184

Beverly Hills had a brilliant idea to help her ailing TV career. Why not have a show with the contestants being the not so legitimate children of famous singers competing for a grand prize. She has at her disposal, the wonderful croonings of Pot Roast, Oliviton John, Fozzie Ozborne and Yoyo Ono Bono. One of these 4 hits a really sour note with the rest of the group and is permanently eliminated from the competition. Bring your voting skills and a nice set of ear muffs as these offspring don't naturally have their parent's singing talents and of course try to help us figure out who dunnit.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. The evening includes the performance, and white-glove table side service of decadent dessert and coffees / teas. For advance tickets mail a check to FMG, 181 Meadow Road, Montague MA 01351 with "POPPED" and your names in the memo or call 367-2184.

The Comical Mystery Tour represents a "New Dimension" in theater. We offer hilarious murder mystery shows that are as interactive as you want them to be. If you want to be a part of it, we'll give you lines or break the fourth wall and include you in a conversation. If you'd prefer to just watch, we'll do our best to make you laugh and enjoy the evening.

Friends of the Montague Grange Inaugural Meeting
The Montague Grange hall, built in 1835 as a Unitarian church and owned by the Grange since 1935, is used for a variety of community functions, such as dances, movies, community meetings, and various holiday events. For 75 years the hall has been an important, and at one time, an integral part of life in Montague.

In recent years the strain of keeping up this magnificent hall has been too much for the membership of the fraternal organization, the Montague Grange, and it now turns to the community, OUR community, for help.

The inaugural meeting of the Friends of the Montague Grange will be this Sunday at 1:00pm at the Grange hall in Montague Center.

Please attend if you are interested in personally helping the organization. We will quickly review our bylaws, mission, and important big-ticket repair list, then immediately move into confirming a fundraising schedule for the year. This will include both events and requests (direct and broad).

The bulk of the meeting will be to discuss the events schedule and create committees for each event. This way each person willing to help the FoMG meet its goals will have only one or two events a year to assist. There will also be a standing Promotions Committee that will be responsible for managing the promotion of all the events, and a Fundraising Letter Committee responsible for the annual letter.

Most of the events will be easy to pull together. One of them, a Monte Carlo night will be quite complex, but should be the biggest fundraising night of the year. Amherst has an annual Monte Carlo night that pulls in over $15,000. We are guessing a successful evening in the Grange hall could net up to $3,000. That's almost the full price of repairing the roof!

Other events planned are mystery dinner theater nights, concerts, the holiday craft fair, and reviving the talent show. All of them, fun events.

So, if you are interested in helping raise funds to repair and improve the hall, please consider coming to this meeting. It should be fun, and a community-building experience.

Keep in mind, a clean, well maintained, non-municipal community hall in our town is a precious commodity. Now is the time for everyone to kick in one way or another.

Please pass this along to any and all lists of friends you have who may be interested in helping out either monetarily or personally (or both). When repair time comes we will also be looking to the community for skilled labor.

The mission of the Friends of the Montague Grange, a 501(c)(3), is to raise funds to repair and improve the Montague Grange hall. Annual Membership is $25 and is tax-deductible, as are all donated funds. Checks can be mailed to FoMG, c/o Conor Power, Sec., 181 Meadow Road, Montague MA 01351. Membership makes Community.

Friends of the Montague Grange Forming
MONTAGUE -- The members of the Montague Grange are creating a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called The Friends of the Montague Grange. This non-profit will be charged with fundraising for the many structural repairs and upgrades desperately needed, including repairing the roof, adding wheelchair ramps, and removing the drop-ceiling from the main hall. We invite all our neighbors and friends who would be willing to join this new organization either as a dues-paying member, an officer on the board, or a committee member for the four events we plan to hold throughout the year. The first meeting will be held at the Grange Hall this Sunday, February 7th, at 1:00pm. The Montague Grange hall is located on the town common in Montague Center, across from the church.

The Montague Grange hall, built in 1835 as a Unitarian church and owned by the Grange since 1935, is used for a variety of community functions, such as dances, movies, community meetings, and various holiday events. As a fraternal organization, donations made to the Grange are not tax deductible, and membership dues collected must be sent to the State Grange. Forming a separate non-profit will allow the committee to repair the hall to receive and keep all donations for hall repair use, as well as allow donations to be legally tax deductible.

A more extensive list of projects / needs can be found here:

Farm or Garden surplus? Gleaning?
Zen Peacemakers is preparing monthly free community meals (through Franklin County Community Meals Program) at a church in Orange -and we are looking for farm or garden surplus donations. Do you have too many squash or beets or anything else this year? Or perhaps fruits/ veggies that look more damaged than you like? Gleaning is also something we would be delighted to do. We love to be creative with offerings like this. Our next meal is Oct 22 -and I will be collecting farm/garden surplus between now and then. Many thanks! We are making lovely feasts -so you can also let me know if you'd like to come eat! Karen at 367 5275.

Boston Globe Article on Granges
This is a nice article from the Boston Globe about Granges in general, and the Laurel Grange in West Newbury.

For those interested in helping Montague Grange grow and do more in our town, we will be meeting this coming Wednesday, September 16, at 7:00pm, at the hall in Montague Center (adjacent to the town common). Give back to the community you live in. Come one, come all. For more info, check out the Documents page in the Grange section of this website. Newsletters and history.

http://www.boston.co...ing_younger_members/

When Gail Vangelist moved to West Newbury three years ago, she hoped to finally find a long-term location for her horse farm.

Vangelist, 44, who moved the business from suburb to suburb several times as farmland was converted to developments and riding trails disappeared, spent a recent Saturday at the town’s Laurel Grange Hall, donating her animals and time for the agricultural organization’s family fun day.

“I hope the Grange will grow so we keep farms open,’’ said Vangelist, who recently joined the nonprofit group. “In a lot of the other towns we lived in, they forgot about the farms, then all the trails closed, and all the horse farms left. It’s a terrible cycle we’ve gotten into in the last 20 years.’’

But, as farms have disappeared, so have local Grange chapters, succumbing to the numerous sports and activities that occupy families. Once attracting 51,000 members statewide, the organization’s rosters have declined to as few as 10 to 15 in some communities. While clinging to their agricultural roots, the local chapters are looking for a niche in an increasingly cluttered landscape.

“The biggest challenge is to convince people to join us,’’ said Calvin Chase Jr., head of the Massachusetts State Grange. “If you have children in the school system, you are running seven days a week with basketball, baseball, soccer, and the various other activities. It’s just tremendous pressure on families.’’

Chase emphasized that the Grange is one of the few organizations open to anyone, from young children to grandparents.

Approximately 60 people attended West Newbury’s family fun day, held Aug. 1, which included a farmers market, live band, and pony rides, said Peter Carter, president of the local Grange.

“That was a nice-sized crowd for us to handle,’’ Carter said. “When they came, they stayed and enjoyed themselves which was our big goal.’’

And, seven West Newbury residents - including Vangelist - attending the event submitted applications to join the Grange. They were the chapter’s first newcomers since the late 1990s, although the organization drew people from Amesbury, Newbury, Newton, N.H., and other communities as their local groups folded, Carter said.

“Unless you socialize in that type of atmosphere, you might not even know it exists,’’ said Glenn Kemper, the chairman of West Newbury’s Board of Selectmen and one of the Grange’s new members. “There’s no welcoming committee, so them having a well-publicized family fun fair is a good opportunity.’’

Kemper said the Grange is an important part of the town for its history and current endeavors, especially in supporting farming.

The West Boxford Grange, whose 40 members are all at least 50 years old, is also struggling to gain new members, said secretary Kenneth Chadwick, who has been involved since 1945.

“For years, Granges would become entrenched in their old ways,’’ Chadwick said. “Young people would come in and want to do something and you’d hear from the members, ‘Well, we’ve never done that before.’ The organization doesn’t change then and they get left by the wayside.’’

The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry formed shortly after the Civil War to help struggling farmers; they banded together to establish cooperative stores that sold supplies in bulk and lobby against high rates charged by railroads to ship farm products.

Today, with fewer farms in the region, Grange chapters have become a social order that supports various charities, including foster care groups, the state Division of Social Services, local food pantries, homeless shelters, and the Beverly School for the Deaf, officials said.

But, agriculture is still an important cause for Rowley’s Grange, which raises money for state lobbying efforts, said Barbara Gasper, its secretary.

“If you’re a farmer, you’re working 24 hours a day,’’ Gasper said. “They still need our help more than ever.’’

But, the group, which celebrated its 115th anniversary earlier this summer, saw membership decline from a peak of 300 to 50, only 20 of whom are active, she said.

Despite an aging membership, there are signs that the Grange will play an important role in the future. After leaders of Topsfield’s Grange recently considered closing because no town residents were involved, more than a dozen locals expressed interest in keeping it alive.

“It was kind of bizarre,’’ said Matthew Johnson, who serves on the group’s executive committee. “It looked like we were going to close and then a lot of people from the town stepped up and decided to join the Grange.’’

Junior Grange programs serving children ages 5 1/2-14 are also growing. Apple Valley Junior Grange, which draws from throughout northeastern Massachusetts, began in 2000 with a few youngsters but has increased to 17 children, with more joining every year, said Kathy Gibson, Apple Valley’s leader.

The children run the monthly meetings, which include crafts, parties, and charitable activities. Members also earn merit badges similar to scouting and participate in statewide contests including public speaking, art, photography, sign language, and talent shows. Older youths help with activities, learning responsibility and public speaking skills, Gibson said.

“That’s the more constructive part but we also try to make it fun,’’ she said.

Gibson, whose two children plan to continue in the Grange program as adults, said she hopes many youths join Junior Grange chapters near their communities to ensure the organization lasts well into the future.

“You’ve seen the decline in the older Granges but the juniors and youth are building it up.’’

Montague Grange seeks assistance on various building projects
Montague Grange #141 is undergoing a number of projects for which we will need volunteer labor. We typically meet at the Grange for work parties once a month, on the Sunday after our monthly business meeting.

If you’re interested in helping, just use the "Volunteer Sign-up Form" to let us know when you’re available and what you’d like to help out with.

http://www.montaguem...fm?gpt=30&g=190&id=7

The work parties will run from 10am - 1pm on the following Sundays: Sept 6, and Oct 11. The projects we hope to complete include:

* Cupola Repairs:
The cupola has been leaking for many years and there is extensive rotting of the timbers. Beams need to be replaced, and the whole thing needs to be sealed up and painted.

* Access Ramp:
In order to accommodate the elderly or disabled members of our community, and to comply with ADA regulations, we need to install a wheelchair ramp into the front entrance.

* Wall Insulation:
Heating the Grange is a major expense in the winter, and a big reason is that the walls are uninsulated.

* Entrance Make-Over:
The hall foyer needs to have the rolled vinyl flooring removed, and the maple flooring underneath sanded and tung oiled. Possibly the storage closet and / or the coat room as well.

* Cloakroom Make-Over:
Strip wallpaper, remove obsolete heating vent, remove/replace tired linoleum floor, repaint.

* Remove Drop Ceiling:
There is a beautiful tin ceiling in the main hall. It needs to be uncovered and have the lead paint stripped off.

* Building Side Sign:
The old Grange sign that hung on the right side of the building needs to be re-mounted.

If you feel like you could help with any of these projects, just use the Volunteer Sign-up Form to let us know when you’re available and what you’’d like to help out with.

If you’re not able to join us for a work party, (or even if you are!) you can still help by donating much needed funds to help offset the cost of materials. Use the PayPal "Donate" link on the right-side of every page of this website.

No Scandinavian dance on Sunday, Feb 15
Note that there is an ERROR in the calendar section of the Valley Advocate (Easthampton MA) announcing that there will be a Scandinavian dance at the Montague Grange this Sunday. There is no dance scheduled for Sunday, Feb 15. Scandinavian dances are usually on the 3rd Sunday of the month (Sept- June), but this month, the event organizers recommend the Dance Flurry Festival (www.danceflurry.org/festival/), Feb 13-15 in Saratoga Springs NY, as a lively alternative!

Winterize Windows Workday
Think "WWW" stands for World Wide Web? NO! It stands for Winterize Windows Work-day.

On Sunday (Nov. 16) between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, any and all friends of the Montague Grange will meet at the hall to complete the work on the window frames. We have all the tools; just bring some good cheer. We had a great time last week!!

This is a nice opportunity to have fun and learn about some power tools. The more people the better. Music will be provided, and perhaps even some refreshments.

Dog Meetup Saturday Mornings at 10! (Rain/Shine/Blizzard!)
Hi all dog owners-

Do you enjoy having your dog(s) meet new friends? Do your dogs interact well with other dogs? Starting next Saturday, we will begin having dog play time at the big field at the end (or beginning...depends on how you look at it) of the bike path in Turners Falls (Across from Unity park, there is a big dirt parking lot. It is the field coming off of that).
All are invited, with these considerations:
- Be prepared to clean up after your dog. Let’s be considerate of other people using this field.
- Please make sure that your dog interacts well with other dogs and people. If you know for sure that your dog is aggressive towards or very afraid of other dogs (and/or people), this is not the group for you.
- Please be comfortable with unleashed dogs, even if you choose to keep your own dog leashed, which is fine. The idea of this group is to let dogs play, so there WILL be unleashed dogs.
- And, if you do unleash your dog, please make sure that he or she is able to stay close by and not run away. The point of this group is to have fun!
- And in general, the most common sense thing to say is: know your dog. We hope to have eventually a large, fun group of dogs. The idea for this group is to let them make friends and get some play and exercise time. While your dog may be perfectly social, be prepared to watch your dog for signs of stress or anger. We want to avoid any bad drama if possible!

If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to post them below. Thanks!

Tiny Tim
I couldn’t find the Advocate article. It was either the 35th ann. edition or the Music fest one. It isn’t online, either.

Tiny Tim
I just received this from a friend about Tiny Tim who was an eyewitness at the Grange hall when he collapsed:

RE Tiny Tim’s collapse- I was there. He was "escorted" down the aisle [to the stage] of the Grange with a person on each side of him for support. Obviously he was too ill to walk by himself. They got him on stage, somehow. He stood there, ramrod straight, looking dazed and grabbed the microphone stand for support as he fell face first from the stage all the way to the floor, still grabbing the stand. Just toppled over like a tree; straight over without putting his hands out to try to break the fall. I’ve never seen anything like it. He had not started performing and was not holding a uke -- just the mic stand!

He died two months later when he collapsed on stage while performing Tiptoe Through the Tulips. His final words, after being asked if he was alright by his wife: "No, I’m not!"

From the Valley Advocate
Yup. According to Dave Lovelace, Tiny Tim had just begun performing when he collapsed on / fell off the stage.

What was the title of the article? I can’t find it on their website.
