Rest Peace, John Aubry
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Montague Center resident, and our local mayor, John Aubry. When I lived there he was always around on his bicycle keeping me and others up to date on what was going on in the village, though you never heard it from him. If the basement light was on at the Grange, he would bike over and let me know. If a fire truck went by, he would dismount and salute. He was kind and gentle, a real patriot, and will be missed. I’m glad I knew you, John.

Millers Falls Survey
The Montague Planning Department and RiverCulture are beginning to "explore opportunities to improve Millers Falls", and to that end they have put together a survey that they're encouraging village residents and business owners to fill out. The survey can be found online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MillersFallsVC, and paper copies are available at the laundromat, the Whistle Stop Café, and the Millers Pub.

The deadline is next Tuesday, July 2, and they are hoping to get as many responses as possible so they can get an idea of what sorts of changes or improvements villagers would like to see. The next step, as I understand it, will be to identify specific projects and then look for funding sources. They are planning to hold a public meeting/forum later in July to go over the results of the survey and to plan next steps.

If you have questions, or would like more information, you can contact Walter Ramsey at the Montague Planning Department or Suzanne LoManto at RiverCulture (which is now part of the Planning Department): riverculture@montague-ma.gov.

Celebration Don Clegg’s Life
Wow! How did I miss this? Don Clegg passed away?!? No!!!

I met Don the day he walked through the doors of MCTV back in the summer of 2006. He was looking for things to do in town, and soon became the stations premier Super Producer, creating all kinds of content to air and bringing in more producers to do the same.

That same summer Don also got involved in the Franklin Area Survival Center, and then the Montague Reporter in March of 2007. In fact, if you do a search for his name at the Reporter's new online archive, his name appears 444 times:

https://montaguereporter.org/?s=clegg

He was also involved in the MontagueMA.net website, having joined in January of 2007. He posted 362 messages on the corkboard and several thousand calendar events, having taken on the role as Calendar Master for years (even being paid to do that for a year).

http://www.montaguem...?userid=4413&num=362

This post from April of 2007 shows what he was all about...

http://www.montaguem...cs=12&ID=14874&g=192

Don was a smart, funny, hyper-involved individual in Turners Falls, and he and I had many long conversations about town politics, tv production, community spirit, and life in general.

Thank you, Don Clegg, for everything you did for Montague, and for your friendship. You will be missed.

Crash
Two young people died on Rt 63 Monday night. I haven't been to the crash site, but I'm pretty sure I know where it happened. There's a shallow s-curve where crashes happen frequently. I saw one happen right in front of me a while back. It typically happens to south-bound vehicles, right into a light pole on the east side of the road.

Maybe now someone will look into it and either put up a bunch of DANGEROUS CURVE signs, or cut the trees down, or even straighten out the curve.

What a tragedy.

Poop Water
I'd like to know why the residents in the MC water district are drinking treated pond water from the side of the road when TF district members get nice clean water from the aquifer?

If we are already hooked up to the TF system why can't we just disband the MC district and join them? They have more staff, better equipment and a far more reliable water source.

".... my hunch? -- because they are the most frequent user of the CODE RED system ..."

Yes, Chief Dodge has been sending out messages on the Code Red system since last Thursday; first to alert MC water users to the situation, then to assure the rest of us that we weren't affected -- and to tell those who don't know that the PD can't help them :-) -- and finally (on Saturday) to confirm that the e coli was gone and the water was safe again.

In at least one of the messages, he stressed that he was just passing along an announcement that the MC Water District had asked him to make, and that he and the dispatchers had no additional information.

I second John H's recommendation that if you want to know more, you should contact the MC Water District

Poop Water
Chief Dodge and the Police got involved -- my hunch? -- because they are the most frequent user of the CODE RED system, and because it was their dispatchers who were tied up by phone calls that dealt with Water issues. Here are some more hunches:
The E. coli issue arose in water coming from the Montague Center Fire/Water District, so it does not affect the Turners Falls Fire/Water District. (Neither District is part of Town government, a bit of charming Montague/New England history.) Also, being a Water issue, it is not the Town that flushes the hydrants, but rather the Water District. The one town-level type of oversight is probably by the Board of Health (and my understanding from the last CODE RED call is that the state Dept of Environmental Protection has now approved normal use, so the Town's BOH is probably on-board as well). I suspect the Water District is accountable to the state DEP, and that they are the ones who imposed and later lifted the BOIL order.
Bottom line, send questions directly to the MC Water/Fire District to get answers on cause, effect, corrective action, future plans, etc.

We received the call from Chief Dodge that the water no longer needed to be boiled.

I haven't seen any announcement from the Board of Health lifting the order.

Strangely, our water now has a yellowish tint as if it has been treated with a chemical.

Have any other residents noticed this change? I am wondering if we should let the water run for a short while or if the town needs to flush the hydrants to clear out any residual ecoili. Any thoughts??

Yes, the Police Dept. Facebook page posted yesterday (Saturday) morning that the "boil water" order had been lifted:

"MONTAGUE CENTER BOIL WATER NOTICE HAS BEEN LIFTED:

"PLEASE Do not call the Police Department.

"Gary Dion from the Montague Center Water Dept has asked me to send out the message that the Boil Water Order is no longer in effect. You can go back to normal by drinking the water, etc.

"I will have more information soon.

Plowing?
The "S" turns on 47 headed to Sunderland have sucked for years. Once you get to the town line it's like night and day. Used to be snow fence back in the day to prevent drifts. This town has the ability to do a good job plowing, but it's selective and that's bullshit. Do the job right or hire employees or new DPW boss who will.

Plowing?
What I mean by "we haven't had that much snow" is that they've not plowed roads when there's an inch or two of slush at times. I know it's expensive to send them out for so little, but the problem with that is that the next day the slush turns to ice. There are several streets in town that can get very dangerous in those conditions. I have slid at the bottom of Dry Hill and the bottom of Gunn Rd., both of which lead into 63 and into a potential disaster.

The Montague Sunderland line is as it always is. Maybe a bit worse due to the unplowed slush than has since frozen.

Plowing?
Stash - My street seems plenty wide enough for two-way traffic -- how wide does it need to be?

patrick - I've heard complaints for years about the Montague/Sunderland line -- is this year really much worse than previous years?

Maybe the DPW could be doing a better job, but what does that mean? If Stash has an actual problem, then it should be fixed. But once the streets are clear "enough", I'm not sure that I want the trucks driving around just because "we haven't had that much snow".

Plowing?
I agree with Stash here. Plowing has been awful. After last Saturday's snow many streets were left completely untouched. Lake Pleasant Rd was a skating rink on Monday. I routinely notice that as I cross the town line into Sunderland, both 47 and Meadow Rd are immediately better. I know the budget is limited but we haven't had that much snow this year.

Plowing?
Evidently the town figured they couldn't be out plowing with the travel ban. Either that or they figured if they screw around long enough they'll get more o.t. .. This winter has been the crappiest plowing I've ever seen. When I have to PAY somebody to do a TOWN ROAD something is drastically wrong. My grandson came over to snowblow for us and there is not much plowed in town. I don't think a fire truck could make it up our street BEFORE this storm. I took the demand bus last Thursday for my P.T. and the driver complained about the road. I hope the DPW doesn't need my support at Town Meeting. Wonder who I send the bill for the road cleaning???

Bicycle The Dark
Way too many people do this. It's akin to not wearing seatbelts and way too many people do that, too. Way too many people walk on the wrong side of the road and also wear dark clothing. I have had some close encounters with these weirdly oblivious people, too. People just do not listen to common sense, scientific evidence and rules of the road..
You can tell people 'til the cows come home that not wearing helmets, walking on the wrong side of the road, drinking and driving, smoking and voting republican is bad for their health and well being but they still do it.

I think it is part of the "following the crowd and jumping off the cliff" mentality. Oh well. we should still care and watch out for them for their safety and our own.

I didn't lose a cat but I am looking for a particular sort of cat. If no one claims her and you are looking for a home for her I would love to meet her.

Thanks, Suzanne

Have You Lost Cat?
Has anyone lost a small gray cat? I had one turn up on my back step this morning. I'm down on Old Sunderland Road close to the river. The cat is completely gray with no tabby stripes or other markings. It looks like she may have been outside for a while.

Great
If you want to add cell phones, go to the Montague PD website and scroll down to where it says code red. If you do multiple cells you have to go back and start over at the PD site..

Well said, John. Art was in a class by himself, but one of his great gifts was encouraging the rest of us to think that we could join him. A remarkable man -- I hope I run into him again.

Most of my contact with Art Gilmore was at Town Meetings, and he was one of the shining examples for the rest of us of how to say something relevant, clearly, politely, and leaving room for disagreement without being disagreeable. Anytime he asked to speak, the room quieted down; anytime he talked about not running again people pleaded with him to hang on. A class act, and a fascinating musician to boot -- his performance several years ago at a REPORTER benefit at the Night Kitchen was enthralling (when I grow up I want to make music like Art, as long as Art did).
Pct. 2 and his close friends may be the first to feel this loss, but the whole town is the poorer for his death.

Meeting
Very good MCTV. Lets cut out the selectmans meeting on the night the DON'T go into Ex SE to discuss the MC School. Kind of stuff that gives the MCTV haters ANOTHER leg to stand on. I've always thought they were doing a fairly good job with just a few crabs by me regarding sound. Mechanical probs at Town Hall which were fixed fairly quickly. Stuff like tonite SHOULD NOT happen. I know they are having a tough go right now, but I believe 120% that they will survive and keep doing class A work for us. Thanks MCTV

I figured I'd put this here as it involves all of Montague. Looks like we're getting the pipeline rammed down our throats or up the opposite end. They are even getting shafted in VT according to the Bratt Reformer. Like I said before, with the Powers that be in DC and Boston it's a done deal and screw the people. Rant over.. Stay dry...

I believe it was Millers Rod and Gun. Went there to the tool shop outings with my folks as a wee lad. We're talking over 60+ yrs ago. Maybe some other local grown old pharts will chime in with more info.. Up until 10-15 yrs ago the range was used pretty regular. Light company owns the property now, so don't know how they feel about it's use.

M2 There is a dedicated lane and more than adequate backstop down there. It has been a range for at least 50-60 yrs. Pretty well grown over on the sides though. Too bad the only real 100 yd free range around.

To build a proper safe gun range takes money. Can't just set up beer cans hanging from branches. If you want to see a very well set up and built gun range look at the one in east Deerfield. Top notch.

Who said they were spooked? Doesn't bother me. Nowhere near as noisy as the airport, which isn't too bad, either, since the jump club moved to Orange.

I know Fish & Game allows hunting -- they allow motorcycles, too, but they're also trying to get rid of the motorcycle club, which is why I dunno how they'd feel about a shooting range ...

But clearly I don't know any more than you do. Maybe somebody else has better information?

(And I agree that it's the jerk behind the gun that is a problem, but there will always be jerks, which is why some folks think that reducing the number/availability of guns you might reduce the problem.)

Pipeline Video
Hello All,

I was interviewed a few weeks back for Hattie Nestel's series on personal stories from the pipeline route. The other interviews start in Warwick and continue eastward from there. Here is the video describing our family's experience :

Yes it is. Fish and game allows hunting so why not target shooting? I know folks that hunt pretty regular down there. Used to be the place for rabbits and pheasants. Why are folks so spooked.? It's the jerk behind the gun that is the problem.

Is that where the shooting range is? If so, I think the range is still being used (at least, I hear what sound like gunshots coming from that direction fairly regulary). Dunno if Fish and Game would allow that ....

Sports Discount Card
Had a nice young lad stop by earlier selling a card for the sports at GM.. I hope others on here will part with the $20. I don't have ability to go to the games so I felt I did a wee part in supporting the folks.

Hello Friends,

I am planning to offer a Yoga class at the Montague Common Hall (The Grange), starting in June! If you are interested, I invite you to vote for the day of the week that works for you, by responding to this 30 second survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QWFJFR3! I am hoping to finalize the schedule in the next couple of days.

If you want to know more about my teaching style, etc.... you can email me privately, or take a peek at my website: www.yogawithnadya.com. I will be offering a really great 'start of class special' for the month of June, and will provide several sets of necessary equipment (mats, blocks, etc).

If Yoga isn't your thing, but you know someone who may be interested, please pass this message along.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to getting your responses and to seeing you in June!
- Nadya

Paper
Stash,
I am the Distribution Mgr for the paper but that is just a title. The paper has an excellent group of delivery folks and a very good office routine The age range is 9 years old to 80 years young for newspaper delivery folks. I will check who the Reporter's new customers were for this week's issue and pass on your compliment to your newspaper delivery person.

Thank you for your subscription and comments.

Community Singing Nights- 2nd And 4th Mondays
Song Passing Through: Release your voice, find your songs, and sing in community.

Song Passing Through is a song sharing group that meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at the Montague Retreat Center from 7:30-9:30. Our mission is to offer an opportunity for participants to let their voice sing out freely and to create an open environment for singing and song sharing. Our meetings consist of an open song share, where participants offer beloved songs to the group, followed by a space for free vocal expression and improvisation. We also meet with the intention to collect the songs that are shared and the lineage that brought them to us so that we may continue to share them with future generations of singers.
Anyone looking to share songs, learn more songs, or explore their own vocal expression and creativity is encouraged to join us. Any and all songs and voices are welcome!

Local Christmas trees
Is there even one place in Montague that sells or grows Christmas trees? I could not think of any so I got one out of town (Leverett) at the Field Family Farm.
