Upgrading The Website
Two comments, now that I've used it a little:

* the "Message" box for creating new posts is very small -- 3 5/8" wide by 3/4" high on my monitor. Makes it impossible to see a post that's more than a few words, which makes proof-reading and editing cumbersome. Can it be made bigger?

* The "Submit Post" button is way down at the bottom. If you're replying to a long message, you have to scroll down to find it. Could it be located nearer the top?

Thanks,

Thanks, Stash! The link has been put into the blue box on the side. We'll continue working on the upgrades on and off for the next several weeks. Wish we had started the upgrades last summer so we'd've been done in time for the 20th anniversary of MontagueMA last October, and fully upgraded by February of this year... just in time for the COVID lock-down. Ah well. The future is still open. 25th anniversary in October 2024!

Upgrading The Website
Hey folks, just to let you know, we're finally beginning to do some visual upgrades on the website code (which also runs leverettma.net, shutesburyma.net, greenfieldma.net etc) and will also be upgrading some of the functionality, such as commenting on posts instead of creating new, linked posts as a reply. we'll also be simplifying how rights and roles work in the back-end (for any admins out there reading this) and generally making it more dynamic and mobile friendly. Why let Facebook have all the fun?

So, if you see any weird layout issues or get an error while posting, please accept our apologies in advance, and thank you for your patience.

New Website Development
Hey everyone. Just an early warning that the programming behind MontagueMA.net and all the other community websites I host using this code will start changing, fairly drastically, in the next couple months.

The plan is to make it easier to use, and more 21st Century social media -ish, like Facebook, Twitter, Diaspora, and others. Many of the fine-grain settings will go away, and new features will come in, like supporting #hashtags and @usernames.

We will utilize Bootstrap as the user interface framework, and streamline the website's layout to be simpler and faster loading. It will work very well on a smartphone and tablet.

Any ideas, wishes, suggestions, etc., will be entertained.

I'll let you know when the work actually starts.

Calling Emails From This Website Spam
Mik,
I know you contacted me about this some time ago and I assure you, I did not tag any MontagueMA emails as Spam, but somehow, my spam filter got the wrong idea.
It is a pain when this happens. Sometimes people registering for Gill Energy Commission workshops go to the junk mail folder and i can't guess why.

Calling Emails From This Website Spam
I have to say, it's pretty upsetting to me when people who sign up on this website and indicate they want to receive all posts by email -- then click the "THIS IS SPAM" button in their email program, instead of coming back to the website and simply change their settings.

http://www.montaguema.net/edit_me.cfm

When you tell AOL or Yahoo or Comcast or Hotmail that the email you receive is spam you are actually asking them to block ALL EMAILS from my server to their server. That includes my other customer's legitimate emails out to the world, and other users of this website who subscribe and happen to also be on AOL or Yahoo, etc.

I don't get paid to run this website. Please don't hamper my living by taking the short cut.

Thanks,

Mik

Hey folks. You may have noticed lately that this website would be down for some reason or another. We have been working on the problem on and off, and this afternoon decided to change the application server software from a free version of the CF language, called Railo, back to Adobe's ColdFusion 9. Yup, we went out and bought a copy for $500 and popped it in.

Also, if you are having trouble logging in, you should make sure to clear or delete your browser cookies for this website.

Please let me know if you encounter any issues.

One of the features that has been asked for by Patrick Pezatti is to be able to respond to messages posted here via email. That is something I'm seriously considering.

Hey, MontagueMA.net is turning 15 years old in October. I'm thinking a couple things...

1. We should have another party. How does Thursday, October 16 work for everyone? And, where should we have it?

2. It's time for a technology upgrade. What one or two features would you most like to see in this website, specifically how it works? A like button? Better mobile interface? Better dealing with pictures? Better linking with people / accounts?

Chime in, please.

Montaguema.net Anniversary
It's hard to believe anything on the Internet can be so old, but yes, MontagueMA.net will turn 15 years old this October. I'm thinking we should have another party like we did for the tenth anniversary. Maybe not a live band and all the hi jinx we had back then, but something.

I'm also thinking that the website hasn't changed very much since then, and that I should update the code a bit and probably remove some stuff that isn't used.

Any thoughts on those two topics?

o Location for a party, and what it should look like

o Functionality that would make the website work better / easier

Hi Mik,

Thank you for this information. I ended up posting the ad from work without any issues, so I'll have to look into my home computer to see what was causing that message to pop up.

I just noticed though, that my postings from yesterday actually showed up! I'm so sorry, now I think I have posted 3 messages advertising my 2-unit rental for sale without realizing it.

Please accept my apologies, I didn't mean to spam people with multiple postings.

Thank you.

Botsby.com Error?
Today two users of this website emailed me saying they were receiving a pop-up when they tried to post to the MontagueMA.net corkboard:

------------------------
A username and password are being requested by http://www.botsby.com.
The site says: "Malone"
------------------------

We do not have anything to do with Botsby.com. If this happens to you and you don't recognize that website address DO NOT ENTER IN YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD.

I've done some quick Internet searches and found that this is an error that has been thrown by Zimbra, a web email package some ISPs have offered to their customers, and which was purchase by Yahoo some time ago and is now in use by their Yahoo groups.

It is possible that the error may only show up for people who have the Yahoo toolbar installed in their browser. It may be experiencing some technical difficulties.

It is also possible that those people have a virus on their machine. We suggest downloading one or both of these free (PC) programs, installing and running a full system scan.

MWW Moves to the Cloud
MWW Moves to the Cloud

Montague WebWorks will be moving its servers to a cloud environment in March

After five years of hosting our websites on a single server (or even a shared server, back in the old days) Mik Muller of Montague WebWorks decided it was time to take the next step in the evolution of Montague WebWorks -- to move up to the cloud.

The big move will start Friday morning, March 15th, and continue through Sunday evening, March 17th. Every website and email we host will move from our existing servers to our new Cloud Servers. There should be no interruption of service, though we ask you to bear with us.

What are Cloud Servers?

Cloud Servers are the same as regular servers, except that a very large number of them are tied together through networking and software to act as a larger, faster single server, that you can then take a "slice" of as a virtual single server.

The main benefit of this is that upgrading to more processing power and storage is literally a mouse-click away, rather than physically cracking a server case open and adding resources to a single box.

This means that, for Montague WebWorks, we will be moving from ONE server that hosts all our websites, our databases, our email server, to TWO cloud servers that will each actually be multiple processors spread across many machines. One of the servers will now be dedicated to only hosting the websites, and the other server will host the databases and the email server.

The plan is to further expand, by the end of the year, to a third cloud server so we can split our databases and email server onto separate machines.

And while we're moving up to two cloud servers, we're also upgrading all the software. Our web hosting server software will get a double upgrade -- from IIS 7 to IIS 8, and from ColdFusion 8 to ColdFusion 10 -- and our email server software will upgrade from SmarterMail 8 to Smartermail 11, which has major improvements for mobile devices.

What's the Bottom Line

The bottom line is that everything will become faster. This website will load faster, and if we also host your email, your email will send and arrive faster, and the webmail interface will run faster, and on all your mobile devices.

Montague WebWorks is moving up, and expanding. By the end of April we should have around 150 RocketFusion websites, with a goal of 200 by the end of the year.

If you're ready to switch your website over to Montague WebWorks, please call Mik at (413) 320-5336. We can get started early next week.

Hey,

I was just looking through the administrative program I use to run all my community websites (MontagueMA.net, GreenfieldMA.net, etc) and saw that this website passed the 3 million page view mark quite a while ago.

We've had 3,652,520 since the website was relaunched in September of 2006 -- a little over six years ago. The website itself is 13 years old as of this month! Woohoo! Who was there for the tenth anniversary party?

Anyway, it's great to see that we're still going strong against Facebook, and we send updates to 100% of the people who want them. :-)

Montague WebWorks endures DoS Attack

Denial of Service Attack takes down local website provider for nearly 24 hours

Around 2:00 on Monday, March 5th, Mik Muller, owner of Montague WebWorks, and many of his customers, began to notice that websites were either very slow, or not loading at all for short periods of time. Email was intermittent and sometimes produced errors.

Muller called up the hosting facility that maintains his dedicated webserver to ask if there was some sort of an interruption event in progress. He was told that one of their Internet Service Providers was experiencing problems, and that many customers in the facility were effected.

As the day progressed the interruptions and blackouts became more pronounced. By 7:00 PM that evening the server had to be shut down completely -- cutting off 150 community and customer websites, 75 of which depend on Montague WebWorks for email.

Investigation by the server administrators at the hosting facility revealed that Montague WebWorks' webserver was under a DoS attack, or Denial of Service. Essentially, a dramatic increase in traffic to one IP address caused a strain on one of the bandwidth providers, which eventually led to a disruption in service.

According the Department of Homeland Security, “The most common and obvious type of DoS attack occurs when an attacker "floods" a network with information. When you type a URL for a particular website into your browser, you are sending a request to that site's computer server to view the page. The server can only process a certain number of requests at once, so if an attacker overloads the server with requests, it can't process your request. This is a "denial of service" because you can't access that site.”

The hosting facility aggressively worked with Muller to control the source of the attack. In a conference call it was surmised that one or more of the websites Montague WebWorks hosts that had experienced an influx in traffic caused the attack. It couldn't be immediately determined which website, or indeed if it was only one website that was the target. In the end, a cautious re-deployment was determined to be the best course... turning one or two websites on at a time and then monitoring for any new traffic spikes. With 150 websites to turn back on, this would take quite a while.

Muller decided to redeploy his ten community websites first, including MontagueMA.net, and FiveCol-Soc.net, to see if the attack was perhaps related to something that had been posted on one of them. He then began redeploying five customer websites at a time with a half-hour pause between each wave, starting with his bigger and more notable business customers, and those running ecommerce websites. He estimates that all Montague WebWorks custromers and websites will be up and running again by Wednesday evening. Any customers still experiencing problems should contact him at the number below.

While this work proceeded, the hosting facility administrators identified a few compromised online gaming servers as the culprits. The owners were contacted and the attack from those machines ceased. The hosting facility is continuing its investigation with their network providers to determine whether there are more servers at work, or if the attack is truly over. This may take a few days, but for now the worst appears to be over.

WikiPedia has written an article on the subject of Denial of Service Attacks:

"A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer or network resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person, or multiple people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely.

"One common method of attack involves saturating the target machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. Such attacks usually lead to a server overload.

"Denial-of-service attacks are considered violations of the IAB's Internet proper use policy, and also violate the acceptable use policies of virtually all Internet service providers. They also commonly constitute violations of the laws of individual nations."

In a March 5th article on Fresh Business Thinking titled "DDoS attacks by unscrupulous businesses on the rise" David Rowe, CISSP, member of the Infosecurity Europe Advisory Council, states that "the use of DDoS attacks as a business weapon is a new trend that has not been seen before in the security space." Rowe further states "[a] survey of US companies shows us that DDoS attacks are a weapon being used by less scrupulous business competitors,” adding that with more than a third of US companies being hit by a DDoS attack in the last 12 months, the threat of distributed denial of service attacks clearly cannot be ignored."

In a February 29th article on TechTarget.com titled "DDoS attack types: Small attacks more common, dangerous", John Pescatore, vice president and research analyst at Gartner, said "Overall DDoS attacks have been on the rise recently."

After dealing with this attack, Montague WebWorks is planning on adding additional servers up to prevent complete shut-down in the event of another attack in the future. Muller is also working with his hosts to assess prevention plans.

Mik Muller can be contacted through the Montague WebWorks website, or by phone at (413) 320-5336.

Leaving the emails in a spam filter does not create this problem. You have to actively report something as spam for this to happen.

It's an education for those of us who don't know about those things. Sometimes I give a site permission to send emails. Then the spam filter takes them out. Maybe I am not that interested in the emails anymore so I leave them in the spam filter. I didn't realize that puts them on a black list.

"Apparently someone who uses Yahoo complained about getting these emails and marked it as spam, rather than go to the website and change their email subscriptions."

That shows an amazing combination of stupidity and selfishness! Sorry, Mik. It's happened to us too, from people who subscribed to our email list and then decided they didn't want the emails, but it's not as drastic for us.

Yahoo website members on vacation
Hey there folks.

I've been noticing an increase in the number of bounces I get from Yahoo's email servers the past few days. Apparently someone who uses Yahoo complained about getting these emails and marked it as spam, rather than go to the website and change their email subscriptions. Arg!

This is very bad for me. I have a lot of customers using my server (there are about 125 websites on this same web server, 95% of which are paying customers) and they depend in being able to reach their customers or constituents. Having bad "bone fides" with any major email carrier, like Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, Gmail, etc., because someone marked email from this website as spam is very bad for my business.

So, I made the executive decision to change everyone's account with a Yahoo email address to be in "vacation" mode.

If you are reading this message on the website and are a Yahoo email subscriber, please wait until February 1st, and then go to your Settings page and uncheck the Vacation box to start receiving emails again.

Thanks,

Mik

Website Anniversary
Hey, MontagueMA.net turns 12 years old next week. It's not a major anniversary, but it's still a reason to have a small party or something. Anyone interested in getting together and having a beer or some food? We did the Rendezvous in Turners Falls two years ago, and the Lady Killigrew in Montague Center last year. I'd be willing to sponsor a food platter at the Miller's Pub sometime in the next few weeks. Who's game?

Upgrading MontagueMA.net
Hey all,

I am thinking about the next round of upgrades to the software this (and other) websites run on. Something along the lines of Facebook in terms of comments vs. corkboard replies, and a few other Web 2.0 stuff (ajax, for those in the know).

I'm also thinking of turning each group page into a stream/wall, integrating all corkboard and calendar posts, and image and file uploads, all into a single page.

Any thoughts?

My apologies to the 29 users on the site that received an email from a new user named "VivianOwen" who happens to have a German email address.

Apparently she's very cute and very loving and wants to get to know you all very closely.

This person actually took the time to join the website, wait for the verification email to arrive and then manually, one user at a time, send that pathetic message.

What some people will do.

Boy this proves that newer is NOT better. I can't understand why people try to upgrade and it turns to crap. I hope they leave the classic up and running.

New Website Stats
Hey, I've put the live website stats on the homepage again. Look for yourself to see if you're in the top 25 for corkboard or calendar posts. These here are the basic site stats. Looks like we're averaging over 2,000 page views a day in the past month! not bad for a small town.

I got an idea?!
Ok, so I bailed on several of the MontMA parties/get-togethers. But I still would love to put some faces with names.

How about a movie night? We could meet at the Discovery Center parking lot or something, and carpool to Greenfield? Eat at the Pint or MESA! (oh, how I miss being walking distance from my MESA!) then hit up a movie at the Garden?

MontMAers take over G-burg!!!

And, in the movies, we don't gotta talk to each other! Tee hee.....

Oh shoot, but how would we agree on a movie?

I think it is a great idea. Would love to submit a picture of my dog and have many Montague friends with dogs too. Can we email them to you? I've sent an email to you with my info. I'm also happy to help sell the calendars to Montague friends.

I am sorry about not being explicit enough with my post about creating a calendar of the dogs of Montague. I did not mean to exclude anyone and I am not a lifelong resident of the area. In the past I have put together calendars of people with their dogs as a fundraiser for the Montague Grange. The calendars name is the wild dogs of Montague. On the cover of the calendar I put a group shot of as many people with their dogs that can show up at a given time. Inside the calendar I put photos that people send me of their dogs. My address again is P.O. Box 977 Montague MA 01351 and my cell phone number is 413-250-3405. I hope this clears up any issues of my previous post. Sally

To would be extremely helpful, if those posting events on this site, would be more explicit in the content. Not all of us are lifelong residents of the area.

Such as the Wild Dogs of Montague posting. It's confusing to me to ask people to pose with their dogs, for something called Wild Dogs?

Also, with any event, I think there should be a brief synopsis and include ALL contact info, location ADDRESS, etc...

There have been events posted that would seem interesting to attend, but a lack of explanation or detauls have discouraged my attendance. Also, it would save time and energy, rather than have people post questions, and await a reply.

Thanks!

Anniversary Party
I could suggest the Millers Rod and Gun, because it's almost in 'The Center'...But by then there's going to be construction going on under the pavilion. The old floor is coming out and a concrete floor is being poured...But if you're thinkin' of a band again...?

Anniversary Party
I'm thinking about having another website anniversary party, this time in Montague Center. Does Saturday, October 9, work for those interested in attending such a thing?

And where should we have it? To my knowledge there are only two places to hold such a thing: the Lady Killigrew, and the Montague Inn. There's also the Night Kitchen but I think that's a little pricey for some people. And there's also the Grange hall.

The Killigrew has a bunch of good microbrews (and Narragansett) and good wines and food (although a limited menu) and inside tables for about 50 if you push it. More seating outside.

The Montague Inn has a large private back room with a pool table, free popcorn, and a full bar with a wider range of beers (Bud to BBC). No food, though, and less seating.

The Montague Grange hall has plenty of room, two floors, and we could even get some live music to go along with it. It would have to be potluck style, though.

I could do either. If we did it at the Inn or the hall I'd bring in some cheese platters and other snacks.

Should I put up a poll? Are there other options for locations?

WOOHOO!!!
I averaged 10 hours a day over the three day weekend moving 135 websites and 75 email domains to the new server, and then split the contents up between the two hard drives (from just one on the old).

I need several beers.

The new look will likely come next week.

Calendar Reminders Now Working
Some of you may have just suddenly received many emails from the website. I just fixed the Calendar reminder script and it just sent out 3858 emails. I know I received 75 emails just now.

Sorry for the sudden barrage, and for the delay in having this feature offline since we moved to the new server.

Cheers!

The "All Corkboards" link sounds great. Anything to make it fairly easy to get a quick overview of "what's new". Thanks!

I suppose I could put the "All Corkboards" link back in the top right area. Still would be good to have the indicators, though.

I like these new changes. However, I do think it will be good to add "new postings" indicators, as you are planning to do. Would it also be possible to add a link to add a separate link to "new postings", where someone could go to just see what's new?
