Regional Transportation Etc.
Local government takes a fair amount of flack on this corkboard but I think we saw last night that town officials are also willing to take leadership and often share the values of citizens in town. The town administrator, Frank Abbondanzio, and Selectboard members clearly were appalled that the pipeline company had not even bothered to attend the meeting where their request for survey rights on town land was on the agenda.

I also think that those who attended that meeting should pay attention to other issues on the agenda. The innovations and cost savings at the wastewater treatment plant are not just PR. What Bob Trombley and his staff have done over there is serious stuff that impacts everyone in town.. But these innovations and savings, IMHO anyway, need to be considered in the context of the fact that the broader sewer system is crumbling. Fixing it is going to be expensive and we need a long term financing plan to deal with it. I suspect Bob would agree with that.

The Selectboard also showed leadership in calling for a more open and inclusive planning process to consider changes in the "fixed route" system of Franklin Regional Transit Authority. Regional transportation is an important emerging issue, even in so-called "rural areas." The FRTA has gone under the local radar screen for too long. I strongly feel the current Selectboard has taken the lead in trying to change this.

My point is not to be a cheerleader for the Selectboard. I am only saying there were a variety of important issues on the agenda last night and we need to give credit where credit is due.
