Double Standard
Got to love it. In the last couple weeks there were articles in the Greenfield Distorter how local business's have donated goodies to the hospital. They told me I COULDN"T bring in boxes of goodies for my nurses in Oncolgy. I suppose I'm not important enough. I am only a lowly patient. Stay well....

Halloween This Year?
I have heard conflicting reports about trick or treating in town this year. It seems many houses are opting out, understandably, but are some houses still planning on doing safe/staggered options? I also saw the Montague Village Store may be offering a drive through..? just wanted to see if I’d get any feedback here.

=======================

Yes, It's Bad. Robocalls, and Their Scams, Are Surging.

By TARA SIEGEL BERNARD, MAY 6, 2018

It's not just you.

Those pesky robocalls — at best annoying disturbances and at worst costly financial scams — are getting worse.

In an age when cellphones have become extensions of our bodies, robocallers now follow people wherever they go, disrupting business meetings, church services and bedtime stories with their children.

Though automated calls have long plagued consumers, the volume has skyrocketed in recent years, reaching an estimated 3.4 billion in April, according to YouMail, which collects and analyzes calls through its robocall blocking service. That's an increase of almost 900 million a month compared with a year ago.

Federal lawmakers have noticed the surge. Both the House and Senate held hearings on the issue within the last two weeks, and each chamber has either passed or introduced legislation aimed at curbing abuses. Federal regulators have also noticed, issuing new rules in November that give phone companies the authority to block certain robocalls.

Law enforcement authorities have noticed, too. Just the other week, the New York State attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, warned consumers about a scheme targeting people with Chinese last names, in which the caller purports to be from the Chinese Consulate and demands money. Since December, the New York Police Department said, 21 Chinese immigrants had lost a total of $2.5 million.

Despite these efforts, robocalls are a thorny problem to solve. Calls can travel through various carriers and a maze of networks, making it hard to pinpoint their origins, enabling the callers to evade rules. Regulators are working with the telecommunications industry to find ways to authenticate calls, which would help unmask the callers.

In the meantime, the deceptive measures have become more sophisticated. In one tactic, known as "neighborhood spoofing," robocallers use local numbers in the hope that recipients will be more likely to pick up.

It's a trick that Dr. Gary Pess, a hand surgeon in Eatontown, N.J., knows all too well. He receives so many calls that mimic his area code and the first three digits of his phone number that he no longer answers them. But having to sort robocalls from emergency calls has cost him precious minutes.

Dr. Pess recounted an incident in which he didn't recognize a number and figured it was a robocall. He later learned it was an emergency room doctor calling about a person who had severed a thumb that he wanted Dr. Pess to reattach. "It delayed the treatment of a patient," he said.

Consumer advocates say they worry the flood of calls could get even worse. A federal court ruling recently struck down a Barack Obama-era definition of an auto-dialer, leaving it to the Federal Communications Commission to come up with new guidance. Advocates fear that it will open up the field to even more robocallers, leaving consumers with little recourse.

Business groups, including the Consumer Bankers Association, counter that defining auto-dialers too broadly would hurt legitimate businesses trying to reach their customers.

Robocallers see the current F.C.C. leadership "as friendly to industry," said Margot Saunders, senior counsel at the National Consumer Law Center, "and they are anticipating F.C.C. rulings that will enable more calling and forgive past mistakes — or violations of the current law."

A spokesman for the F.C.C. said the commission would seek public comment on how auto-dialers should be defined, and then "take action based on the record it compiles."

---------------------------------------
Rising Complaints

Complaints about telemarketers and scammers have steadily increased in recent years, with robocalls identified in the majority of cases.

---------------------------------------

Automated calls are increasing because they are cheap and easy to make. Robocallers can easily dial millions of consumers daily, experts say, at little cost.

That's essentially what one accused robocaller recently told legislators at a Senate hearing: Adrian Abramovich, a Miami man who regulators say made nearly 100 million "spoofed" robocalls, was peddling vacation packages that were advertised as coming from well-known companies like Marriott. But when consumers pressed to hear more, they were transferred to foreign call centers often trying to sell time shares, according to the F.C.C., which is seeking a $120 million fine. Mr. Abramovich has denied the charges and asked the regulator to reduce the penalty.

The calls are increasing despite stepped-up enforcement and other efforts to stamp them out, which some have likened to a game of Whac-a-Mole; robocallers find new phone numbers to hide behind once their numbers are ignored or blocked.

The federal Do Not Call List, which is supposed to help consumers avoid robocalls, instead resembles a tennis net trying to stop a flood. The list may prevent some (but not all) legitimate companies from calling people on the list, but it does little to deter fraudsters and marketers, some of them overseas, who are willing to take their chances and flout the law.

Complaints to federal regulators are also increasing sharply. The Federal Trade Commission, which oversees the Do Not Call Registry, said there were 4.5 million complaints about robocalls in 2017, more than double the 2.18 million complaints logged in 2013.

"Everywhere I go, it is what people talk about," said Denise Grimsley, a Republican member of the Florida Senate, who said a woman named Elizabeth leaves her prerecorded messages several times daily selling a vacation package.

"But it's not just annoying," she added. "They are coming after your personal information."

---------------------------------------

Florida passed a bill in March giving phone companies the authority to block certain robocalls.

https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2018/00962

Other efforts are underway. The Federal Trade Commission has held contests to encourage app developers to create innovative ways to block calls. And some phone companies offer blocking services, though "many people don't have access to free, effective robo-blocking tools," said Maureen Mahoney, a policy analyst at Consumers Union.

With some exceptions — like calls from schools on snow days — auto-dialed calls to mobile phones are typically illegal, unless a person has given prior consent. Advocates say courts have generally interpreted the law to say that when a consumer revokes that consent, the calls must stop — though they often don't.

The same rules apply to creditors seeking to collect debts, which lawyers and advocates say can be some of the most ruthless dialers.

There are fewer restrictions on landlines, unless you're on the Do Not Call list, but prerecorded telemarketing calls are always illegal without written consent, advocates say, and debt collectors must stop calling after consumers send a written request.

James Hunter, a Florida resident who is paralyzed below the waist and can no longer work, had his federal student loans forgiven. But Navient, the giant company that services and collects student debt, made more than 2,500 automated calls to him about his private loans over a period of about two years, sometimes calling nine times a day, according to Mr. Hunter's lawyer, who filed a suit on his behalf claiming Navient acted illegally.

Navient did not immediately comment.

For now, consumers must do their best to find ways to control the wave of calls. Brett Hein, a sports editor at a newspaper in Ogden, Utah, said that for him it was a losing battle. His mobile phone has been inundated with calls in recent weeks, rousting him from bed and twice interrupting him while he was volunteering in his son's kindergarten class.

"It's disconcerting to have your phone go off all the time," Mr. Hein said from a landline in his office, when his mobile phone began to ring.

It was another robocall. The fifth one that day.

Wild Berries?
Ed, that is a good point. I don't think of montaguema.net as "the internet" anymore. Most traffic has moved to Facebook, networks like NextDoor and montague-mutual-aid; etc. Usually I post in "Buy Sell & Jobs" or "Real Estate", and have the sense few others see (or read) the posts. When I wrote this one, I was envisioning those "Reply" emails coming straight back to me via email. I wasn't even remembering that responses would show up on this page!

Thanks.

WHERE TO PICK WILD BERRIES?
Seeking help to find places where one person can considerately pick some raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or wild grapes -- when each of these appears this summer (& fall?). Either publicly accessible trails, etc., or if you have more on your own land than you need, I will be grateful!

I definitely want to do NO harm to land or vegetation anywhere.

I feel that berry craving, and the nutritional need for them. But it's not good for the budget to buy organic berries at current prices. And I'm trying hard to reduce my consumption of plastic packaging, which is sometimes part of the picture!

Thank you so much for any leads or invites!

I hope everyone is feeling safe and well. <3

A quick check of Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia...Falls,_Massachusetts) suggests that there is no obvious problem with Millers Falls. They agree that the original name was Grout's Corner, but somehow to me that seems like something you do when you make over a bathroom. . . . :-)

Newbie, I agree with you on the spam calls. I still can't believe the carriers allow the calls through, since (a) it takes up their valuable resources, and (b) we don't want the calls!

The federal Do Not Call is a voluntary list, and some spammers actually grab the list and use it to make calls! So, it's not a resource anyone really uses anymore. It was built for legit businesses to purge their own call lists.

I have Verizon for my cell phone (not sure if your dad is on a cell or not), and they've introduced a new system where you get the name of the people calling, if they're legit or the number is real and actually registered with them, and "POTENTIAL SPAM" if not.

There are also apps you can install, like Mr. Number and RoboKiller, which I use. When a call comes in from a known spammer number, it blocks the call and you never hear it ring.

They'll get it right one of these days... either the carriers (Verizon, AT&T, etc), or the phone makers / software vendors.

Face Masks For Hospitals
Hi Chris,

Thanks for contributing to the mask-making effort to help keep more folx safe!

This info about where to drop off face masks was posted this morning on the Montague Central Mutual Aid listserve (montague-central-mutual-aid@googlegroups.com):

"The Western MA Nurses Association/Baystate Franklin Medical Nurses has established a safe collection spot for donations of PPEs (including homemade masks) on the porch of 74 Crescent St, in Greenfield. See attached image for more info. This is Rudy Renaud's house (former Greenfield City Councillor, works for MA Nurses Assoc), and I got the information from her via Facebook. Re homemade masks, she said: "People in the community can use the homemade masks while we are looking for n95s for HCPs. We will sort through them so it’s good to make them if you can."

Covid-19 Issues
Hello,
As this virus spreads, if there are elders or compromised folks in the community who have no one who can help out, please contact LifePath 413 773 5555, or your local church or helping org. such as Montague Catholic Social Ministries. 413-863-4804

Needs can also be posted here for folks to help out if /when they can, but this shouldn't be the only place to ask for help.

We can flatten the curve of COVID-19 by due diligence of hand washing, no hand-shaking or close contact, (social distancing) and by self-quarantining if you develop flu or flu-like symptoms.

Be safe everyone.

Might not hurt to try putting up another one and seeing what happens. Sometimes people will do something like remove a sign like that and then regret it later. If they see it again, they might decide to change their behavior. Not a guarantee, but I've seen it happen. I think most people are not evil, but they tend to be clueless, and sometimes it takes more than nudge to wake them up.

Doesn't always work, but that's probably what I would try. If that doesn't work, then it's the motion-sensitve camera and involving the cops. . . .

Stash, I applaud your effort. Do you know what happened? Perhaps the wind took it away? If someone DID take it, it's because there are dinks everywhere -- as you know. In my own neighbourhood, there are some folks who drive too fast for the locals' taste and someone put up a sign, "Drive like your kids live here" which I thought was very appropriate. Sure enough, someone stole it but it didn't stop the home-owner from putting up another -- which has remained to this day.

Good luck, and I hope dog-owners pick up after their dogs in your 'hood.

Happy belated Christmas.

Mike, that sounds like the way I would do it, too. Most people do want to be neighbourly and sometimes folks simply make a mistake. Perhaps if Stash sees this as a repeated behaviour, he could do similarly and, by posting a sign, remind the person in question that responsible dog owners dispose of the animal's feces responsibly.

I had a problem some years ago with a person (or persons) throwing plastic bags full of vegetable fiber onto my property (at a wooded section along the road that looks like it might be no-mans-land). They looked like what you might have left after you'd run them through a juicer. I put a couple of hand-lettered signs on trees that said, "Please - No Dumping", and it stopped.

Discretion is an important quality of being a functioning adult and you, being 77, should know this. Yes, within certain parameters (don't forget that the first amendment IS regulated and you can't always say what you want when you want to) you can write what you want but being a community forum, I'd hope you'd think about what you're writing first.

Your logic is flawed: "Don't like it, don't read it." How do I not know until I read it? As I said earlier, if this was your personal space then I wouldn't be calling you out but as it is a community forum, I am. With that, I close my end of the back-and-forth.

If this were Stash's personal social media account, I wouldn't fault him for venting as it would be his own social media space. But this forum is a shared community space.

JTHK, clearly yelling randomly on social media is the way to solve the world's problems these days...

Or you could stop being a complete dick and use your words instead of typing symbols to conceal your nasty attitude. I don't care how old you are, you shouldn't insult people in an on-line forum in this manner.

And why would you yell at someone? Perhaps a polite, "Could you please pick that up?" would suffice. And since you indicated that you can get out there time, you could ask someone who is able to write a note on a piece of a paper and tape or tack it to a surface nearby so this dog owner would see it. Often, people simply need to be reminded of basic neighbourly courtesies but people universally hate being yelled at which is why you're "yelling" probably would accomplish as much as that dog put out of its anus.

And at 77 you should know better.

Being handicapped and have only seen her leaving the area I just can't run out and yell at her when she is over 100 feet away. I can see the intersection of Highland and Quarry out my kitchen window. Even if I see her coming I still wouldn't have the time to get to her. At 77 years old I shouldn't have to pick up after some lazy $^%#^&&. Maybe I'll find out who she is and send her your way. And YOU can take care of the stuff.

Did you try asking respectfully if she would clean it up first before you run away to the police? It sounds like you're very passionate about dog feces.

Got some lazy butt woman walking her dog on Quarry Rd. that is to stupid/lazy to pick up after her dog. Going to set up game cams and turn the sd card over to the PD. Where the pile is located is also on private property so trespassing will also be pushed. Enough is enough.

Others Having More Verizon Dsl And Phone Problems
Yes! It's always been a bit of a problem, but we just kind of ignored it except when it got particularly bad. That was true this weekend. We ended up having a tech come out.
(FYI - re: internet alone - Their solution -- which might work for others - was to 'turn down' the speed of the DSL line. Apparently we are at quite a distance from the Verizon station and so a high speed won't work well at that distance -- although the billing office is quite willing to encourage you to increase that speed and charge accordingly...
It's working so far, but then again, if often does, except when it doesn't!)

Yes, we also noticed static-y landlines. I think we mostly just live with it and I hadn't thought about a more collective solution. If you're on that 'next door' site, perhaps we could also put a similar note/request there to see if folks are having troubles.

Nicole

We had similar problems for years when we had DSL. Thankfully, we've been riding the Comcast train for a year and a half now and all is well!

Are you/others having more-than-the-usual Verizon DSL and phone problems, like me in recent 2-3 months? Examples: almost daily temporary loss of DSL service, static-filled land lines, no dial tone. Repeated technician visits, billing office not offering enough credit to compensate for loss of service or hours on the phone with support?

I'm NOT starting a general gripe thread, only determining if this is a general problem around our town. If so, might be interested in organizing some collective action to get better service/attention to the issue. Maybe file collective complaint with MA attorney general?

Evening. Any info on how much the town has gotten from the pot shop? Been by it numerous times during the last few weeks and there has never been more than a few cars in the lot. Different times of day as well. Can't see how they'll survive at that rate. Tad early but hope all on here have a great turkey day, even without the game :-( Stash

Stash, that was a temporary glitch. Dean was trying to fix the schedule feed and must have put the new password in the wrong place. I don't think the mistake lasted even a few minutes.

My suggestion is to call the station at 413-863-9200 with issues like this, rather than post a complaint here. This is not their support board, and they don't check it.

Thank you for watching MCTV.

Beautiful Lamb Bottle Lamb
Brook's Bend has a beautiful two-day-old Icelandic/Shetland lamb who could make a wonderful addition of a friendly sheep in a small flock or herd. She is being fed on a bottle because her mom wasn't ready to be a mom yet. Her mom is black with horns and her dad is white with horns. They both have nice fleece and she would have great wool for spinning, knitting and felting. She is healthy and spunky!

Please pass this on to anyone who might be able to give this little bottle lamb a good home.

Contact Suzanne Webber at 413-367-2281 for more information and to meet her.

would the start of a compromise be allowing a nontown run organization for alums keep the use of the Mohawk mascot and the school adopt a new one that the alum association could also use? But I think the students should be involved in the exact cut off of the last use of Mohawk by the school

Mike,

I think it'd be very boring if everyone had the same opinion! :)

To badly quote Dr Martin King about time: the time is now. The time is right now to do the right thing. I'm sure that some of the white folks in the first (forced) integrated schools in the south said that because their parents attended an all-white school, then they should as well.

I understand that local people can sometimes feel allegiance to their local educational institution and/or sports team. But institution after institution has changed their mascots over the years away from using people. Yes, some folks are always bothered by change but that's part of growing up in this world of ours.

All the best,
Jonathan

JTHK - I agree that mascots usually aren't used as teaching tools, especially on pro sports teams. But locally, with area schools, I think if that were part of the conversation it might be helpful.

I tend to agree with you: "people shouldn't be mascots". But when when you have kids who've gone all their lives to a school that does that, and even have parents and grandparents who went to the same school, I think it's important to tread lightly and go easy and try to get as many people on board with any change before it's made. Reasonable people may disagree (maybe you do), but that's the way I feel.

The thing is: mascots AREN'T used as a teaching tool. They're used as a rallying cry for My Team on a basic level and on a professional level, as a major source of income for a sports corporation. (A deeper question: why are they used as a rallying cry? Is it that the supposed "savagery" of Native people serves as an inspiration for a physical sport?)

I've heard from many members of the the Native community that, as an example, the Washington Redskins is as insulting as some other, more common racial slurs. The Harlem N***s would be a parallel.

I like my simple solution: people shouldn't be mascots. The Amherst Hurricanes? Fine. Even the Minuteman at UMass is fine by me because that's not a cultural group or ethnicity -- it's a job that has a solid historical and documented basis in the history of the Commonwealth.

Is it Friday yet?!

Rob - I like the idea of using the mascot/logo as a teaching tool. History should not be erased, and it should not be sugar-coated. That said, history can look very different from different angles: one people's "march of civilization" can be another people's "genocidal massacre". So figuring out what to teach and how to teach it can be tricky. . . .
