New Library Director Resigns
Yes, indeed, congratulations Linda! (And thank you for agreeing to step in to a clearly difficult situation!)

I do hope that at some point more answers will emerge about what, exactly, happened here. By all accounts, the library board conducted a thorough search and chose an exceptional candidate, who was reported to be looking forward to making exactly the sort of move that he was about to make. To have it all fall apart in just two weeks is a bit of a shock, to put it mildly. I do NOT want to imply that anyone has done anything wrong here, but are there lessons to be learned here?

Congratulations, Linda. I'm sure David was well qualified, but who can argue with 16 years in Montague working closely with the director! If you ask me, always hire from within.

Soup and Games Fundraiser very successful
We of the Montague Public Libraries are very grateful to have been the beneficiary of the March Hope and Olive’s Soup and Games Night, which raises money for local non-profits. The event raised over $1900 for children’s library programs, thanks to the generosity of local restaurants, businesses, and patrons.
Wonderful soups, breads, macaroni and cheese and pizza were donated by 2nd St. Bakery, The Brass Buckle, Bread Euphoria, Diemand Farm, Franklin County Technical School, Gill Tavern, Green Field’s Market, Hope and Olive, Susan Lowery, Magpie, Max Brody and Joanna Frankel, Mesa Verde, The People’s Pint, and The Rendezvous.
Over forty raffle prizes were donated. Donors included 25 Central, About Face Computer Solutions, All About Beads, Animal Crackers Pet Shop, Aubuchon Hardware of Turners Falls, Scott Belanger of One True Water Therapeutic Touch, Black Cow Burger Bar, Bunny Caldwell, Country Jeweler, East Heaven Hot Tubs, Fran’s Designer Outlet, Gretchen Wetherby, Good Dirt Pottery, Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange, Greenfield Savings, Magical Child, Michael Nix, Mary Ann Packard, Red Fire Farm, Ristorante DiPaolo, Sonic Creations, Barbara Stewart, Sugarbush Farm, Wilson’s Department Store, and Yankee Candle. Thank you also to the many individuals who attended. More helpers than we can name here baked, planned, procured raffle items, set up, ran the coffee can raffle and bake sale, bussed tables, greeted guests, and cleaned up. We could not have done it without you.
The staff and management of Hope and Olive were wonderful to work with and great hosts for the countless people who came out to support our children’s library programs. We thank them for their hard work and dedication to helping support community non-profits. We encourage everyone to help support all of the above businesses who believe in helping out their community. It’s hard to make up for the steady decline in outside funding for children’s programs, but our generous library supporters make all the difference!

Library Fundraiser at Soup and Games Night
March Forth on March 4th to Soup and Games Night at Hope and Olive for Montague Public Libraries’ Children’s Programs.
Here’s a cheap, fun night out for a good cause: Hope and Olive’s monthly benefit event, Free Soup & Games Night, in March to benefit the Montague Public Libraries. Local farms, restaurants and bakeries will donate tasty eats. Soup and Games Night proceeds will fund the following, either whole or in part: the popular Hands-on Science Program, a No Strings Marionette Company new puppet show, The Three Little Pigs, in July, Music and Movement with Tom Carroll and Laurie Davidson, and a bilingual children's concert with Mr. G on May 4th in Peskeompskut Park.
According to Hope and Olive’s website, “Beneficiaries tend to be not for profit organizations, arts organizations and social services that have lost funding….” The Montague Public Libraries have provided a wide variety and quantity of children's programs in the last fifteen years. Many of these programs were funded by outside sources, and this funding has greatly declined. The Library has to be creative to keep offering our well-attended, free programs (outdoor puppet shows for 150, music and movement concerts for 60-90) that are open to all.
March forth on March 4th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM to Hope and Olive to enjoy a free buffet of soups & breads, grab a drink from the bar, and sit down with friends to play games or chat. Those who wish to can make a donation to the Children's Programs at the Montague Libraries by adding to the donation jar, buying baked goods and refreshments, or trying their luck at a coffee can raffle. Raffle prizes include gift certificates to area restaurants and businesses. For more information, to donate, or to volunteer, contact Linda Hickman at 863-3214 or sign-up on-line at www.SignUpGenius.com...AB29A64-soup/7873358. Donations can also be mailed to the Montague Public Libraries, 201 Ave. A, Turners Falls, MA 01376

"Dubito ergo cogito; cogito ergo sum." [I doubt therefore I think; I think therefore I am.] ----René Descartes
John Patrick Shanley said, “The title ‘Doubt’ really had the power for me, not the Catholic church scandals. And so, yes, I meant that to be implied in a variety of ways as a powerful and useful tool to answer something in the culture. Whether it was the invasion of Iraq—and the certainty that that was the right thing to do—or people in the Democratic and Republican parties who, year in and year out, show up like convicts chained together—having the exact same positions on everything! They’re just chained to it. I don’t think that’s ‘thinking.’ And that’s what functioning, effective members of a culture do—say, ‘Look! I have doubts. And that’s a good thing. You should have doubts, too. And if you don’t, you’re a hammer-headed clown!’”
Questions to reflect upon about the play Doubt, a parable
1. In the opening monologue, Father Flynn says, “Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost you are not alone.” How does this idea pertain to your life, to your community, to your country and to your world? What are the ways we act with certainty when there really isn’t any certainty at all? Think of specific examples in each of the spheres of life.
2. If we think of the play as a parable for the way the Bush administration handled affairs following the attacks of September 11, how do you see the parallels between the world of post assassination Catholic school with post 9/11 USA?
3. Sister James says, “I want my peace of mind. I must tell you I have been longing for the return of my peace of mind.” Think about how acceptance of doubt as an inevitable human condition could allow for peace of mind.
4. Sister Aloysius says, “If I could, Sister James, I would certainly choose to live in innocence. But innocence can only be wisdom in a world without evil. Situations arise and we are confronted with wrongdoing and the need to act.” Think about her actions and how her pursuit of justice aligns with your own, with our leaders’ both on the national stage and international stage.
5. Mrs. Muller says, “You may think you are doing good, but the world is a hard place… sometimes things aren’t black and white.” Think about Mrs. Muller’s dilemma. Have you ever been faced with an unclear conflict? How about the many larger questions at play in our world? What do you think of her words in the frame of a parable?

Judy’s last day - FLASH MOB
In case you didn’t know, Judy, the librarian at the Montague Center library, is moving on. Her last day during open hours is tomorrow, Wednesday. Perhaps we can have a Flash Mob at 4:15, or 6:15 for those who work till 5. Or just show up and say "au revoir" to a wonderful person who always smiles, and always remembers our names. We wish her well.

Library hours are 2-5, then 6-8. See you there.

Harry Potter
Well, thanks to my daughter Miette having finished the book quickly on Tuesday, I was able to read and finish the book last night. Whew!

No spoilers here for those who haven’t read the book yet, but I will say this: it’s a good read, albeit a tad dragging at some points where the reader is obliged as usual to put their mouths to the veritable firehose of catch-up information. Despite that, J.K.Rowling doesn’t disappoint. There are serious twists and turns, unexpected jolts, some sadness, and a lot of fighting (as one would expect in a finale). Quite a ride, and a worthwhile read. With 15 million copies sold worldwide in the first 24 hours and who knows how many more since then, JK has promised to eventually write an Encyclopedia to fill in all the gaps and further define the HP world.

And the fifth movie is pretty good too, although it’s really dark, and they left out more than half the book, literally. The whole Quiddich thing is missing, as is the potion to make you confident and all that. And they didn’t really show Harry in detention as much as he was in the book. That didn’t carry over, ’cause I’ll tell you, the fifth book was brutal!

Great books for summer
Hey, I’ll just reiterate that if you’re looking for a great summertime read -- Carl Hiaasen. Almost any of his books, especially the last four. Very entertaining. For mature readers.

Also, the last Harry Potter book is coming out in July. Oh boy. Book six was the largest event in the history of paper, they say. I can’t imagine how big an event the release of this last book is going to be.

Movie: A Long Engagement
I just borrowed the DVD "A Long Engagement" from the library and man, what a good movie. If you can get past the subtitles (or if you understand French) it’s a great romantic / sleuthing story with great effects and real people. I highly recommend it. Stars Audrey Tautou (of Amelie fame) and is set around WWI. It has sex, murder, war scenes and bucolic countrysides. Ah life.

Funny thing I noticed about the wartime effects... it’s not shown as glorious, but very realistic: gritty, disgusting, muddy, and really awful.

Great books
I’ve just finished The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, and I thought it was just delightful. Not entertaining in the same way as Hiaasen, but still thoroughly enjoyable!
